Racing Games and You!

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 2:13 am

I just re-installed Need 4 Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (2002). After playing, I was reminded of when I first played, back when released. I started smiling as I recall playing the game, then going for a drive in my car.

It took awhile to adjust as my "perceptions" got back to "real life" and I felt safe to drive again. My foot wanted to floor the gas pedal. I wanted to brake early to account for my fish-tailing. I had to resist the urge to hug the inside of a corner. Every time I played for a good lengthy time, driving afterward took a little "readjustment" :)

Anyone else experience this with driving games? Are there other games where the "physics" in the game may throw your "real world physics" off a little afterward?

Never really been a fan of racing games. Maybe because I svck really bad. Usually end up hitting the barriers and being stuck in the grass. Then again, I haven't played them in years.

Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit for the PS1 was pretty fun and I enjoyed the Hot Pursuit mode and played it a lot. There's one on the PS2 I liked cause it's the only version where the Police Chopper will shoot missiles at if your wanted gauge is full.

I play the **** out of Mario Kart 8. First few matches I have to warm up since I always get the drift backwards and end up off the track.

Love a good racing game when I do play them, but it′s not something I go out of my way to do. I think my favourite is N4S:Underground. Preferred playing where you race against another car on a straight and you have to shift gears perfectly or else you fall behind. Loved the speed, the music and the girls :twirl:

Yes, I′m a guy and I like music. Imagine that... ;)

i played the crap out of the original Need for Speed on 3DO, it took years before NFS had routes instead of circuits for races. NFS was the only one in the series for a while where you really could reach top speed screaming down a highway in a Lambo.

Not too into racing games like I used to be. Last real one I played significantly was Midnight Club 3 I think on PS2. Always liked the Midnight Club games. Just couldn't get into Midnight Cub LA though, which was the last racing game I touched.

Though back in the day I was heavily addicted to Star Wars Pod Racing: Racer's Revenge. Freaking wrecked everyone as Aldar Beedo and Sabulba on the track to the point I was the only one left. Loved that game.

My favorite racing game is Need For Speed: Most Wanted, which came out in the original Xbox era.

It is set in a New England fishing town where the fishing industry has obviously been replaced by high-rise offices and such. I just really loved the city, with its Lovecraftian abandoned insane asylum and a melancholy twilight feel to the whole thing.

Also, this was back when NFS games still had a manual gearbox, which makes it much more fun to drive.

I also liked Burnout: Takedown, which had nice mechanics. Later versions didn't hit that sweet spot for me.

I have played various Gotham and Forza type games that are more realistic, and that is cool, but I like something a bit more arcadey and crazy, except with good physics and ideally a gearbox.

One time after playing a bit too much I tried drifting around a corner and just about hit a lamppost in real life. Didn't try that again.

Yeah I could never get top speed in NFS4, the best I could do with the CLK-GTR was 320kph(kilometers). A porshe though, damn.. that svcker was super fast and super hard to control.

Btw as it seems I'm the only one that's played it, NFS4 is actually Need For Speed: High Stakes. The music in that game was more of a draw, than the racing itself for me. Electro Optick was awesome.

High Stakes was pretty good, as the police were a little more difficult to evade. Also your car got damaged, which adds some more caution to wreckless driving. I liked NFS3 Hot Pursuit better as it was simplier, ran better in multiplayer, and had a ton more cars that you could mod in.

I forgot about Road Rash! That was a fun series! The 3DO version was awesome.

I had that game on the Saturn. Played that all the time.

I had the Game Gear version when I was a kid. Worth the weight of all the batteries I killed in gold.

I had a lot of Sega stuff growing up.

Hey, guys. Anyone up for Days of Thunder on the NES? ;)

Hard game. Made it up to second to last race but since I never won a single one my sponsors pulled out, i.e game over. And I had only one track left.

I don't play racing games when I'm home at my own place, the only "racing" game I've really played in the past two decades is Mirror's Edge. However, my father is a huge racing gamer and got some fancy wheel thingy too, so I usually play a little whenever I visit. He mainly play rally games too, like http://store.steampowered.com/app/310560/, which is nice, cause it's the only racing sport that I'm not completely uninterested in :P

Oh yeah, I remember reading in some swedish gaming magazine ~15 years ago and there were some bragging in there with some supposingly very good racing times in Colin McRae Rally 2.0. I asked my father about his times, and he beat those with several seconds B)

I don't think that's ever happened to me. I play a lot of racing games too.

I think minecraft influenced my confidence and curiosity to go caving in Asia earlier this year. Looking back on it, I don't know how I did it..
