Your thoughts on forced third-person perspective?

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 8:52 am

Since Oblivion this has really been an issue for me. I find it odd since most of my games are in third person, but ES games I always play in first person. I avoided horses in Oblivion, but in Skyrim it also applies to Werewolves and Vampires*.

I was wondering what everyone else thought about this sort of thing, and if it should be continued or not? Personally I don't like it and would be happy if it didnt appear again, but it's not even close to a deal breaker so long as the majority of play is first person.

With some things, it's tolerable. Werewolves, for instance, were a 'we don't have time for both, its one or the other' type of situation. in situations like that, i'd rather have a forced perspective than have something cut altogether.

In situations like killcams, however, it's really inexcusable. The animation cycle should just default to whatever view setting you're on, not force the perspective to change.

I don't mind those instances. Sometimes even the slomo kill cam is cool. Especially when you sgoot someone with a bow and it follows the arrow all the way to the target's death. Very fulfilling after a long battle. Sometimes it is a nuisance, though. I can understand why it would annoy people.

I do prefer FP, though.

It can be very annoying sometimes, like the forced always-first-person horse riding in Skyrim. I thought it was generally more dynamic and controlled better in Oblivion. In most cases it doesn't annoy me, though.

Yeah, I'm confused here. I'm pretty sure Oblivion was the only one that had first-person horse-riding since Daggerfall.

If anything, I'd say Oblivion's optimized for first-person. Playing in third-person makes me dizzy and has the camera freak out when you backpedal on hills. It's not fun. Skyrim on the other hand did kind of force you into third-person more than it should have. At least the horse controls weren't tanky?

Bethesda just does an excellent job with first person perspective. I prefer it over third person.

However, it seems like other games just can't get first person perspective right. I was happy when "GTA V" added first person mode though.

I have the opposite problem: it is forced first-person that enrages me. Oblivion was the worst offender in this regard. All conversations force the third-person player out of third-person and into first-person. Every. Single. Conversation.

Force greets were especially obnoxious. When an NPC like Glarthir force-greeted you the game yanked you violently out of third-person. And then, when the conversation was over, it spun you back around, causing acute disorientation and even physical nausea in some cases.

As if that wasn't bad enough, in Oblivion third-person players had to continually go out of third-person and into first-person when playing a law-abiding character. First-person was the only way to know whether an object was owned and whether touching it would be considered stealing. Not fun.

I think a player's POV should always be respected. Nobody should ever have to adopt a POV that they do not want to be in, whether that POV is third-person or first-person.

Absolutely, I do not like to be forced out of my favored POV for any reason. That includes cheesy 3rd-person POV kill cams and forced werewolves or whatever (that no time excuse is wearing thin).

It's nice that TES games offer POV choice but that choice should be left up to the player not the game. I started playing TES games when it was 1st-person only. I prefer that POV and that is one reason I've bought into TES series. That's thing, I'm primarily a 1st-person player and very rarely use the 3rd-person view. Usually it's just to take pictures with my companions in our finest gear and that's all I care to use it for.

Do not dream too much; third person view will be forced on the player more and more in the future. See how the Altmer look like in first person view in Skyrim. Actually every race has the same height in first person view in Skyrim. I bet Beth is about to abandon it.

That's a sad thought. Certainly not the first TES disappointment and probably won't be the last.

I play in first person with occasional switches to third to see my character or whilst running.

Oblivion was good for me perspective wise. Skyrim svcked. Forced third person kill cams that were gimmicky and couldn't be switched off. Forced third person horses and vampires/werewolves also svcked. Just like how forced cinematic in Fallout 4 svcks.

Luckily with Skyrim I just got that first person body mod and kill cam toggle. That meant I could look down and see my feet, but also be in first person on horses and such.

I doubt very much there will be forced third person in the future. Like it or not TES has always been primarily first person.

I constantly switch perspectives if the game allows. Playing either way doesn't bother me...

Almost exclusively 1st Person Perspective, except for an occasional check to see how a new piece of equipment or clothing looks on the character, or if I've got to navigate some tricky terrain by jumping from rock to rock, etc.

Taking me out of 1PP unexpectedly and into 3PP really wrecks my connection to the character, and sharply reminds me that I'm playing a video game. At that point, I'm forced to sit back and wait until my "self" has returned to the character, and then regain my bearings. It's very disorienting, although not to the extent of nausea (some of the absurdly hilly terrain in Mount & Blade, which would in actuality only be navigable by mountain goats or professional climbers, not cavalry, can drive me to the brink).

I loaded up Oblivion the other day after a long time away from the game and it made me motion sick to play in third person. Iblivion was my first TES so the camera away never bothered me but going back to it after Morrowind and Skyrim made me so sick I had to stop playing and download the mod that stops camera sway. http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/1840/?

I'm okay with it, depending on what's going on. Crafting doesn't bother me, since I'm not even really focusing on the character but rather looking at the UI. However, becoming a werewolf, mounting/getting off/riding a horse, does tend to bug me quite a bit.

This is why I never used the Gangrel′s shape-shifting abilities in VtM:B.

In every type of 3D world environment I much prefer first person. Playing in third simply doesn′t do it for me.

Use the Enhanced Camera mod for skyrim, turn into a werewolf then you'll see why it's bad in first person. It's a one way ticket to vomit and motion sickness town. That's probably why they forced third person because it's easier to move around and navigate in when in vampire lord or werewolf form.

Forced perspectives bother me... It is vital for me I can switch back and fourth in TES games... Forced 3rd person for Werewolves/Vampires... I'll only let it slide because they would've been removed entirely without the forced 3rd person. I hope this is a trend that ends after Skyrim though.

I think it depends on what features are implemented. A popular request is a naval element, like Black Flag, but handling a ship of any size entirely in first person would be a significant feat to accomplish, and would rely on actual sailing techniques (mostly having crew yell warnings and positioning). But even if it can he accomplished, gunnery would be impossible to do from the helm in first person. The same issues arise with any sort of battlefield command. Should things like that hbe avpide entirelly because they are inherently difficult-to-impossible to accomplish with a first person system?

Many players wouldn't be able to handle the stress of a realistic PoV when commanding a frigate in a naval fight. A captain had to be great at multi-tasking and hearing everything that was being shouted at him because he needed to know exactly what was going on to accurately pilot the ship while also giving his men the word to shoot or take cover.

Exactly. The same really goes for any command situation. The interfaces used in RTS games simplify things, but most people aren't able to filter through the incomming information and issue orders with the precision that any kind of command requires in a realistic medium.

Which is kind of the question... If it's almost, or entirely impossible to implement a system in first person, should that system be avoided entirely? This also extends to any sort of management system, as people are already complaining about settlements in Fallout being disjointed and immersion breaking because of the interface system.
