[RELWIP] Imperial Dungeon Textures - 2K Parallax

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 2:21 pm

I've been working on this on and off for a number of months now. It's a lot of work since it's essentially 2 different tilesets in one (the dungeon and the prison) using different kinds of textures. The Imperial dungeon tileset seems to be the kind of neglected sibling when it comes to dungeon texture mods. Everything is true native high resolution here with next to no upscaling tricks/shortcuts used, which you commonly see in other texture mods (which is what prompted me to start doing my own texture mods in the first place). Only the late Qarl's textures seem to touch these, and even then it doesn't really cover all of them (those prison cell bricks that greet you during character creation are still a blurry mess for example). It kind of makes sense since you spend very little time in this environment, but from a completionist mindset it really irked me that this element was missing from an otherwise HD modded install.

The brunt of the work is pretty much done now, with just some planned tweaks left and I'm always open to suggestions. Not releasing this officially on the Nexus yet since I want some good "marketing" first with good screenshots, but the problem is that I'm on a barebones Oblivion install right now, and I'm not at the moment feeling up to spending all those hours configuring and reinstalling all the mods out there to my liking. All I can provide are some teasers using the dreadful vanilla rendering with no AA active:

Here's a dropbox link containing the textures as well as relevant meshes modified to be parallax-enabled:

If someone with a mod setup with a nice OBGE or ENB configuration active could take some flattering screenshots, I'd highly appreciate it. I would only ask to not have it stray too far from the original feel of the game with crazy color toning and whatnot, and probably go easy on any DoF effect as well, since in this context the blurring kind of takes away the sharpness of the textures I want to highlight.

Very good textures once again! Your dungeon textures are the best!

Here's an album with Screenshots: https://picasaweb.google.com/115217717761348855858/ImperialDungeonTextures?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCNbh7auaiufefA&feat=directlink

Make sure to use the "Download" button to get them in full size.

The different lighting conditions in the later images was achieved by dropping a lit torch at the floor (via http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/16282/? mod) so that it looks the same as if the player carries a torch, but without it being in the way in the screenshots. The bed texture is still missing, so it looks a bit out of place due to Qarl's normal maps being overly sharp.

Alright Pherim. I made a new bed, just for you!

I also decided that the textures looked a bit too clean for the environment they're supposed to portray. Previously I had spent a lot of time making the diffuse layers more worn and dirty, but the normal maps were still responsible for a large part of the "clean" look, so I ruined them a bit. Tried not to overdo it though.

Also fixed an issue with the normals for the arches on the prison cell entrances, where the Y axis was inverted by mistake.

Oh, very good! Almost a shame that you can't actually sleep in it! :D

Before I release this I also decided to revisit my earlier Ayleid textures and start reworking some of them with the new experiences I've picked up since then, and give them the parallax treatment as well. Here's a WIP
