Skyrim Keeps crashing ridiculously often

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 9:42 am

At this point it's to where I can't even play. I got this character to level 25 and everything was fine. Now I can't walk 5 feet anywhere, play more than 5 to 10 minutes without crashing. I'm at my wits' end. I just want to play my game in peace. I've tried adding ENB, I've tried adding all sorts of other things, I've tried lowering graphical settings. I don't understand. Do I have to choose between a modded game and being able to not play this game at all? If so I might as well delete this. I just don't understand what the problem is. And I also have issues with missing textures. Then, I read somewhere that Skyrim shouldn't be in Program Files x86 or Steam and then I have to redownload AGAIN which means I'll lose my character AGAIN and if that's the case I think I'm just through with this nonsense. Can anyone offer any insight as to why this keeps happening? I just want to enjoy my gmae...

Have you sorted your loadorder in http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1557786-rel-loot-thread-21/ yet? If not then do it and try to play your game, but should you still get CTD's then something is wrong perhaps you need to clean all installed mods.

You might need to learn of how to use http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1529894-relz-tes5edit/ for mod cleaning and troubleshooting mod issues.

Remember and this is VERY important, do NOT remove any installed mod(s) in your current game, because all mod http://afkmods.iguanadons.net/index.php?/topic/3676-skyrim-information-baked-into-saves/. However, if you do remove a mod(s) and still can play Skyrim then expect issues here and there anytime.

The best thing to fix this is to reinstall everything from scratch and I am not joking about it since I know what it means to reinstall everything from scratch, which I have done a couple of times in the past.

So I have added and removed some mods here and there but I didn't think it was THAT big of a deal. I do have TONS of saves so I could maybe theoretically go back like 15 levels WHICH WOULD svck but maybe see if the crashes were still present. Anything I've removed however is because of issue that LOOT said to and from there it was simply adding things.... I've also cleaned literally everything with TES V Edit. That's the thing that's frustrating me so much, is that I've done EVERYTHING all these 50 tutorials have told me to do, yet it hasn't solved my issue. From what you're telling me it seems like I've removed a mod or two here and there and because of that I'm screwed. I'm SO sick of having to restart this game from the beginning. I just want to have ONE character who completes the MQ and has shouts and goes to Solstheim and stuff and have NEVER been able to do that because I don't want to play vanilla yet when I install mods I invariably have game breaking issues...

Well then don't either add or remove mods in your game.

Like I told you I know how it feels like to start over when having a character at level +20 and everything seems to be working then a single mod issue forced the player to scrap everything and start over.

Don't blame yourself for this, blame Papyrus and Papyrus is what causing this.

Thanks Leonardo, I'm just so frustrated cuz I feel like I'm in Hell asking for ice water, just cuz I wanna play the game I payed for with mods. I guess I'm just gonna redo everything, HOPEFULLY CORRECTLY, then restart with a new character. Sigh.

I'm very new at putting mods in.. I just got my PC in April and while I have had issues, I don't think they are as bad as what you are going through. You didn't say, but I would guess you are using a Mod organizer of one kind or the other?

Without going into a long drawn out explanation... ( unless you really want me to) I would create a second profile.. name it CTD ( Crash Test Dummy) Start from the game and add in mod's one at a time ( or in very small groups) I did one at a time...but I started with the unofficial patches, Skyrim & DLC's.. then added in Racemenu, Alternate start-LaL, SKSE, SkyUI, Wyre Bash.. I use NMM which now has LOOT built in... though you do have to activate it. From their I tested out the mods that I consider a "must" ( the above mods aren't just "musts" to me... they are, I'd prefer to go back to my 360 without them mods).

By adding each "new" mod one by one... then going through the steps... I know when I add in "new" mods that they are having a conflict with an "old" mod... For instance I have a New Orc character... I added in about 10 mods ( follower *spouses* and adoptable Orc children being the most). When I ran into an issue, I knew exactly which mod was conflicting... I just had to figure out why. It wasn't hard to figure out, it was right in the description, I had just forgotten to take out a mod.. once it was removed... no problems at all. ( well a slight one with head discoloration, but that's being looked at)

Yes I know it IS a tedious thing to do, but it only needs to be done once... then when you update, just add the mods in blocks, it still won't be a problem to track a problem down. I mean you could add all the mods back in at once after doing updates and see if their are any issues, if not... then just go to playing.

I don't know if that is helpful to you at all... but for me it's better than ... :banghead: or :brokencomputer:

Look at that list of mods. I mean really look at it. Any problems that you have keeping a stable foundation upon which to play your game are totally self-inflicted. Do you really need to overhaul everything in the game? I mean Skyrim is actually a fairly robust platform for modding, but there are limits. Especially when you try to overhaul every aspect of the game with bloated mods and multiples of compatibility patches to try to get it all to function without blowing up before you get to Whiterun.

Get that mod load under control first before you even start thinking about a stable game. Instead of using big, bloated monstrosities with multiple compatibility patches, try to find lightweight, small footprint mods that perform the same or similar function. How many of those mods do you actually need to make the game enjoyable?

My advice is to trim your list to those mods that you consider absolutely essential. Then work in some smaller, more tightly focused mods that tweak the aspects of the game that annoy the crap out of you. It's easier to enjoy playing the game when you can actually make progress with your character throughout the course of it without tearing your hair out because it's constantly blowing up and crashing.

If you want to play Skyrim with a bunch of mods, you have to learn how to install them properly. Use TES5Edit, learn how mods conflict with each other and how to fix it. Read through the comment section of each mod before even thinking about installing it (you'd be surprised how far a ctrl+ f of the terms "crash" or "ctd" on the first couple of pages can get you).

Also, once you've installed you've found a stable load order and are ready to play, treat any new mod that you feel like installing like a game of russian roulette, because that's really what it boils down to. You can't be entirely sure if even a highly tested, highly endorsed mod is going to play nice with your setup. Get your mods in order, and then force yourself to avoid installing more until you've finished with your character.

Skyrim is actually an extremely mod friendly game. I've played and extensively modded Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 + NV, and Skyrim blows them all out of the water when it comes to stability (assuming you're using SKSE and enboost).

There is a lot going on in that load order and I believe I see several mods that would conflict or try to change the same things..i.e the two water mods in the list. Also with as much as you are changing, you should have a bashed patch in there too.

First thing though is this a new problem and you were able to run that many plugins before or are you new to modding and this is your first go around with that many mods? I ask because the majority of us learned by adding mods in a little at a time and fixing crashes by trial and error and process of elimination.

Also what are your computer specs? Running the vanilla version is one thing but when you add in that many changes and script heavy mods you can really tax your system and cause crashes. ENBoost and the SKSE .ini addition help immensely with memory problems in my opinion and I use them in every play through no matter what mod load I have going. The ENB boost can be used without any graphical modifications and you still get the benefit of it.

I have a pretty high end machine and I still occasionally get a CTD but I run about 250 plugins and a ton of texture replacers. I usually leave 4 or 5 slots empty so I can try out new armors or weapons when they pop up but at the moment I am maxed at 255 and played a lot over the holidays. Saturday I think I logged in about 7 hours straight without any crashes.. a little FPS drop here and there but nothing major so it can be done but I have worked a ton on my load order to get it where it's at now.
