Can a 2011 game actually beat a 2015 game?

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 5:25 pm

As most people know Skyrim was sold on 2011 and was considered the best roleplaying RPG for the next few years. Although many games that have come out during 2015 have good graphics. Can they really stand up to the amazingness of Skyrim itself?

I'd love to see what your opinion would be on this topic.

How old a game is is not an indication of how good it is. I still enjoy Morrowind and some PS1 and N64 games in addition to brand new games. It's the content that makes them good, not the graphics or the engine's technical intricacies.

In my opinion, there are some 1983 games that stand up to 2015! Good games aren't just about graphics, they are more about entertainment and immersion. To me, anyways. I would rather play Atari Adventure than one of the modern RPGs I saw on You Tube recently, hands down.

I agree with C4B4L. If a game was good in 2011 it is still a good game today.

Asked in a Skyrim forum. Guess what most answers will be?

As great as Skyrim and several other games are, for RPG story I've yet to see one beat Planescape: Torment. 1999!

Of course it can. I still believe some mid to late 90s FPSs trump any Call of Duty games out today by far.

It is all in the eyes of the beholder. Whichever game a gamer thinks is best, IS the best for that gamer. Having saying that, I do agree with MI that the late 90s CoD games are getter than many today.

But, my favorite game IS Skyrim, which I have played since it first came out. Everyone has their own best game, and they (the gamers) are ALL right.

While visuals may help a game, there's also gameplay, story (if it has one), music, controls, and other things to consider. In the end its all a matter of taste anyways, as some people may love or enjoy one game and not another. This doesn't mean one is better then the other. And if one means by sales, well older games have had more of an opportunity to make more money. Speaking of old games, I've been recently going back and playing some old Sonic and Mega Man games as of late, since I still have fun with them.

One thing I should mention though that honestly bugs me, is far too many people these days talk about graphics, but don't even understand or know that they are in fact made up of multiple components. There are textures, there are models, there are other things like shaders and lighting. I'd even say animations play a part. I won't lie, I enjoy many texture replacers for Skyrim. It adds to the established beauty the game had, but it is just eye candy, and does nothing for the game play. Is it really all those components or just a part of them people enjoy when they talk about a game having good "graphics" these days?

Anyways as much as I love Skyrim and have put countless hours in it, I'm still torn on calling it the best rpg I've played more so because it felt more of an action game to me, but also because I've played many other rpg's in my life. Oblivion got me into the Elder Scrolls, and Morrowind was great too, but if it weren't for the Final Fantasy games, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and even Pokemon, etc, I wouldn't be into rpg's at all, and thus missed out on this series, and Skyrim.

THIS!

Really, graphics is secondary, and in case of Bethesda games, it's highly relative. Their amazing modability makes it possible to adjust almost every aspect of them to make them look and play however we want. If anything, they are timeless. That being said, the best gaming period was the late 90s, everything that came later (excluding indie) was just repetition. When did the last truly innovative AAA title come out? Exactly.

I'm obviously exaggerating a little, but many genres and franchises we know today were already invented back then and have mostly been refined and built upon since then. Of course, one of the reasons for the lack of innovation and revolutionary titles is just the evolution in graphics - AAA games have simply become too expensive to take any chances.

Agreed! My favorite of all time (thus far) is Master of Magic, circa 1995(?). Though it has its flaws, some glaringly so, no other 4X I have played since surpasses the fun I still have in MoM :)

I don't see how graphics are an indication of quality.

I like Civ3 better than Civ4 in spite of better graphics and I haven't been interested in Civ5 at all. Graphics is not all.
