Sanctuary Hills Problem

Post » Fri Dec 04, 2015 2:23 pm

So my main base/home/settlement is Sanctuary Hills. I have all my power armor suits in my custom built house/shack (I build the bottom like a garage/building station for my suits and a staircase going to a small shack on the second story.

Anyway, my problem is SANCTUARY ALWAYS GETS ATTACKED. Not whilst I am there and not in real time but Preston Garvey (I think that's how you spell it) keeps sending me there (he is also stationed there) to solve their problems which is MORE RAIDERS.

Now I'm sure there are a dozen ways to stop raiders but the fact of the matter is I HAVE DONE ALL OF THAT.

I have turrets everywhere and my defense is 131

People: 8

Food: 9

Water: 19

Power: 26

Defense: 131

Beds: 10

Happiness: 76

[Just to make sure I covered all my bases]

Now I don't know what to do to keep the raiders out because somehow they are getting past my butt-load of turrets that are stationed at each and every house and at the entrance.

Does anybody know why Sanctuary is getting attacked so much? (every time I go there to talk to Preston there is ALWAYS another problem with Sanctuary Hills whether that be Raiders or Feral Ghouls) and how I can stop it. Thanks

Don't get me wrong I love this game and have 60+ hours but it gets kind of annoying when the same settlement gets attacked 9,000 times.

They spawn inside the settlement, i tend to used the prefabs with floor and roof to make a sort of concentration camp with my resources (water + food) hid in there and turrets along those walls. For example in Sanctuary mine is between the house with workshop and the river. Takes a little work as it's so sloped but if you get it right and wall off the prefabs you can not have to worry

I wish my Sanctuary Hills got attacked...waste all the defenses I have and don't get to see it in action

Enclosed the settlement with Walls and now have 147 defense and apparently Feral Ghouls attacked.

Once I heard that enemies spawned inside settlements I included a ton of extra turrets on the inner buildings. I may even add more.

Nothing will bother Sanctuary short of a small army all wearing Power Armour.

Sanctuary defence = 302

Had one attack there by a single Super Mutant. He got rekt.

I don't think enclosing the whole settlement is the answer. Spawns can happen even inside of walls. Walling in some resourses is not a bad idea. Things like power generators & water pumps can get blown up with a stray grenade, or after taking heavy fire. You must have a lot of turrets. Try placing them up on roof tops (not the ground) they wont get swarmed or destroyed so easy. Also as you collect armor and weapons from wasteland baddies equip settlers with better gear and they will be more effective in these fights.

I have turrets mounted on roof tops down the main strectch of road from bridge to start of cul'desac (loop in the road) I have two bunkers manned at the bridge with two settlers wearing combat armor and using combat rifes. My defense is rated like 70's but my population is 16-18 and most my farming / trading / scavenging settlers have a better assortment of weapons and armor then the pipe pistol and rags they arrived with.

The only time I effectively help out is if its a larger band of super mutants. Raiders /ghouls seem to get wasted before I can even find out where the gunfire is coming from. Sanctuary is actually a better settlement as the spawns seem to always happen at the river or from the cul'desac area (loop in the road).

- In short try equiping your settlers better and getting population up.

Remember to give some extra grenades to settlers on defense duty and make sure they are 'equiped'

(not just in their inventory)

If you keep having to do most the "clean up" work then adjust turret locations and manned bunkers.

Hope this helps!

* Also I built the raid siren thingy and placed it next to a manned bunker at the bridge (this seems to self activate, or get switched by the guard there) this does seem to alert my whole settlement and motivate them to rally up with their guns drawn.

I heard that turrets don't work unless you are there during the attack. Is this true?

my Sanctuary settlement is basically the workshop, a bit of land out back for crops, and then everything built on top of the workshop. I've had raiders spawn inside the walls when I had a larger boundry, so to get around that I minimised the ground area that is my "fort". Unless the spawn inside the workshop itself I'm basically covered. (Or spawn on the roof like the settlers do lmao)

By default, the game only loads areas that surround the player. The entire map is never active, just the cells around the player. So, yes, it's true.

to be fair, you do get.. how long, 12 hours? to respond to the attack warning. Stop chatting up Cait and go help the settlers lol

Not in my experience.

I was at Red Rocket on the way back to Sanctuary when I heard turret gunfire. When I arrived I checked the perimeter to find a dead Super Mutant to the North, near the bridge to Vault 111.

Same sort of thing at The Castle. Arrived to the sound of laser and mg fire. The turrets at the main gate were taking out an Alpha Deathclaw. Its health was under 25% by the time I arrived. The settlers were all grouped together inside the walls.

edit: ahh, explains it.

So if a tree falls in the forest but nobody is around to hear it.. then it makes no sound.

I must disagree on that in the matter of seeing one settlement I did not respond to when I got a random pop up requesting my help in defense of. The aftermath I did see which included dead super mutant bodies and destroyed turrets and water pumps. So something happened there even when I was not.

This doesn't change the fact that nothing happens when the player isn't near by - like within a few cells. Appearances can be deceiving.

Nope. You didn't see any battle, did you? What you saw was a cell loaded with aftermath effects once the player arrived. The Gamebryo engine simply does not work that way.

Omg, that defeats the whole purpose of putting turrets in my opinion.

I put a sh1t load of turrets in Sanctuary to make sure they defend the base while I'm away. I have like 5 times the amount of turrets needed just to make sure the base can handle itself in case of an attack, it's overkill for this reason only. Now I find out they don't even function unless I'm near them babysitting. Do the settlers do the same as turrets ? Stay as statues and do nothing unless I'm there with them ? I gave them each lots of quality armor and weapons.

Bethesda, that's not the way to design a game. I understand that having multiple cells on the map can put a strain on the processing, but at least make the cell active when it's getting attacked, only then and it's enough.. It's really annoying to be in the middle of a mission and to have to interrupt it just to go babysit your base.

Tip: use tcl command in console to view your base from above, from a birds eye view. I usually go 30-50 m up into the air till I have all Sanctuary base in my vision, like google maps. It's useful to see where the attacks are coming from and where to better put your turrets. It's also good for placing objects

Yes this may be very true but its results none the less. Meaning that when our tree falls in the forest and no ears can hear it it still makes soundwaves. Same as when I saw the generated results of not responding to the request to defend my settlement. Generated results that would probably be the same if I had stood in town at my spawn point welcome rug and done nothing at all ...(except maybe draw the attention of some enemies). *

I still had some working turrets.. No settlers died.. I admit the blown up water pumps were a bit baffling but still I dont feel the need to break from my current focus to defend each time I see a pop up telling me "Blah blah blah is under attack"

* which still screws up the end results.

Point I am making is that I still 'belive' we are better off with a defense value to tweek the generated results of what ever game mechanics actually deal with us NOT responding to the cries for help.

I couldn't agree more with this. The few times I have received these attack warnings, I didn't drop what I was doing. I actually completed the current quest I was on, fast traveled to two different vendor locations to buy/sell loot and then FT to my settlement. Even then, I seemed to arrive just tin time to help defend the town - nothing got destroyed, I've read there is a time limit, but I am unsure of what that is, but it is at least a long while (which makes no sense if you think about it. The town is under attack for around a day or so, and yet nothing is destroyed once the player arrives.).
