I am just starting to play the game and doing some of my first crafting. The new settlement wants me to build some beds and Momma Murphy wants me to build her a chair. When I try, it looks like it is trying to build 18 chairs or 18 beds. Can I not just build 1? After a PC restart, it is now asking me to build 999 of each item. I am lost on this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Can you elaborate little bit about how you got your problem? I am pretty sure game wants you to build only 5 beds and 1 mama chair.

When I open the workbench and select furniture and then beds, the quantity that it looks like I am building is 18 and the required steel is like 3x that, same for the wood.

I maybe able to post a screenshot somewhere.

When you go to workbench mode, you always can build only one object (bed, chair, plant...) at the time. The number which you see next to object you are building is likely number of objects of this type you can build with resources you have. I would need to see screenshot to tell more.

In workbench mode there is a bar which lists all the basic requirements of your settlement at the top of the screen (water, food, beds, defences). If these things are in red, you need more. If requirements are satisfied, they turn green.
