FO2 Windows XP patch WTF

Post » Tue Jun 15, 2010 4:06 am

Look, I never game on pc, so all this "exe" type of junk is new to me. :brokencomputer:

Like a dummy, I got the original version of FO2 that needs the patch for XP, so when I tried to install it I got the black screen. I got the "killap" patch, but to install it, it says I need to add it to the fallout 2 installation directory...

How the hell do I do that?

Please explain the whole thing to me like a was a Neanderthal

There is a better way...
Re-download the installer version of the patch: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=704
save it to your desktop. When its saved, double click the file to run it. It will install the patch automatically, All you need do is tell it the folder where you've installed Fallout 2.

*edit:

If this is the file that you downloaded, I've found that the installer may strangely attempt to create "New Folder", in the Fallout 2 directory (and complain that it must be installed in the Fallout 2 directory), if that happens, use the mouse, click on the "file path" that it displays [mine was "c:\games\Fallout2\new folder"] and erase the "\new folder" part... So it (in my case), said, "c:\games\Fallout2". Your path may vary a bit, but should end with "\fallout2" ~no quotes.

Okay, here's the thing, I cant install FO2 it at all

When I put in the disc and hit "install" my curser disappears, and my PC just freezes up :brokencomputer:

My PC's only about 4 years old, so I know I can run it. Could it be a f***** up driver or something?

Its an installer that's way out of its element. Remember, it expects a reasonable PC from 1999.

Check here for the instructions for installing manually.

Option #2 (costs money though...)

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/fallout_2

You get a digital download (DRM free) installer that just works. Point- click- and its done.

I bought both even though I have the CD's. (Tactics too)

This is what the NMA manual installation instructions say...

First, create a folder for your game called fallout1/2 (ie c:\games\fallout1 or c:\games\fallout2).

Copy (CDROM):\program\win\falloutw.___ (Fallout 1) or (CDROM):\program\win\fallout2.___ (Fallout 2) to the folder you created and rename it to falloutw.exe/fallout2.exe.

Now you have four choices, depending on the installation size you want:
Small Installation: Do not copy anything else.

Medium Installation: Copy (CDROM):\master.dat (318MB) to your fallout folder (ie c:\games\fallout1 or c:\games\fallout2)

Big Installation: Copy Copy (CDROM):\master.dat (318MB) and (CDROM):\critter.dat (150MB) to your fallout folder (ie c:\games\fallout1 or c:\games\fallout2)

Humongous Installation: Copy Copy (CDROM):\master.dat (318MB), (CDROM):\critter.dat (150MB) and Copy the entire (CDROM):\data folder to your fallout folder (ie c:\games\fallout1 or c:\games\fallout2)
Create a text file in c:\games\fallout1 or c:\games\fallout2 called fallout.cfg or fallout2.cfg and add the following line to it, depending on your installation/game:

Okay, this is how Im translating this...

1.Make a new folder called Fallout 2

2.Save a copy of the disc in the Fallout 2 folder, and rename this copy "fallout2.exe"

3.Create a text (word) file, and name it "fallout2.cfg"

4.Copy and paste the script...

"[sound]
music_path2=(CDROM):\data\sound\music\

[system]
critter_dat=c:\games\fallout2\critter.dat
critter_patches=c:\games\fallout2\data
master_dat=c:\games\fallout2\master.dat
master_patches=c:\games\fallout2\data"

...and save it to that document.

5.Install the freakin game

Is this correct?

Is this correct?
No

[first ~just in case] Click open "My Computer" >> Click open the local disk "C:", and in the File menu choose New >> Folder. (immediately type "games", and press twice). Repeat this step again, but type "Fallout 2" as the folder name, instead of "games" ~and no quotes.

Leave this folder open and go back to MY Computer, right click on the Fallout 2 disc and choose "Explore" (this bypasses the auto installer, and shows you the disc contents).

We will do the Humongous install.
* Humongous Installation: Copy Copy (CDROM):\master.dat (318MB), (CDROM):\critter.dat (150MB) and Copy the entire (CDROM):\data folder to your fallout folder (ie c:\games\fallout1 or c:\games\fallout2)

# Create a text file in c:\games\fallout1 or c:\games\fallout2 called fallout.cfg or fallout2.cfg and add the following line to it, depending on your installation/game:

Drag (left click & hold) the files Master.dat, critter.dat, and the folder named "DATA" into the open Fallout 2 folder.
Next Click open the folder "program", then "win", then drag the file " fallout2.___ " into the Fallout 2 folder with the rest.

Now... Right-click the fallout2.___ file and choose "rename". Erase the three underscores at the end, and replace them with EXE
It should look like "Fallout2.exe" (Windows may truncate it once you do this, so it may just say Fallout2; but it will then have the Vaultboy head for an Icon)

In the Fallout 2 folder, click the FILE menu, and choose New > TXT document; press enter to load it into the notepad editor.

Select/copy/ and paste the following into Notepad:

[sound]
music_path1=c:\games\fallout2\data\sound\music\
music_path2=(CDROM):\data\sound\music\

[system]
critter_dat=c:\games\fallout2\critter.dat
critter_patches=c:\games\fallout2\data
master_dat=c:\games\fallout2\master.dat
master_patches=c:\games\fallout2\data

*Change the "(CDROM)" text in the 2nd path above to match the letter of your CD drive.*
Save the text file, In the save Dialog... choose to save it as type "All Files"
~See image http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj125/Gizmojunk/Save.jpg
Name the file fallout2.cfg

Lastly... use the right mouse button to (click & hold) drag the file Fallout2.exe onto your desktop. Release the button
and select "Create Shortcut Here" from the context menu that opens up.

Done.

You can run Fallout 2 by clicking the icon on your desktop.

It's worth the $5.99 to buy it on GOG, and you will be supporting a great website.
