I often forget that I even got addicted. I am eternally greatful that they got rid of those eye burning white out effects that reminded you that you are still addicted/head is crippled.
My habitus for my INT 8 character: 1. Sleep for 8 hours to get "Well Rested" perk; 2. Go on mission, sprinting my ass off as much as possible to get there before my Well-Rested runs out (fast traveling seems to take about 3 times as long in game clock terms). 4. Maybe pop a mentat before the slaughter begins. 5. Kill everything in a fairly quick pace, but not so quick that I might die . . . 5. Once the bad guys are all motionless and starting to cool and go stiff, sort through their stuff and loot as much as me and my dog can carry in one trip. 6. Head home (I sometimes fast travel home, but generally avoid it). 7. Sort gear: raw aid items into the Workshop, weapons I'll scrap for mod for XP into a container next to the weapons bench, same for garments, stuff I'll sell (e.g., 200 year old packaged Ding Dongs or packs of petrified cigarettes) goes into a chest near where Traschcan Karla likes to pose, 8. Separate the "Junk" I don't want to get broken down (e.g., Abraxo, Anti-freeze jugs, skulls) from the stuff I want to break down, stand in my "scrapping spot" flick on pip boy light, and drop everything in a ring, then scrapt it all 9. Put on my Lab coat, Ushanka hat, and thick nerd glasses (actually still haven't found those with my latest toon), and sleep for a couple hours. 10. Get up and cook up any raw food I have in workshop; 11. Cook up some drugs. 12. Do as much modding as I have adhesive for and/or "talk to my quest giver." . . . a day in the life of a Bethesda devoted fan Wastelander *sigh*
No ones mentioned orange mentats. Pretty noticeable difference in vats accuracy before you get any special perks for that. With chemist they can last a decent amount of time. Nothing wrong with a little exp boost too or graqe for large shopping trips.
The chem perks are awesome. My junkie character has Mentat and Buffout effects that last 24 minutes at a time with no side-effects or risk of addiction.
Even if you don't want to use a perk on preventing addiction, Addictol, Refreshing Beverage, or Grilled Radscopion eggs remove addiction and are easy to get.
EDIT: As someone else mentioned, Graqe and Orange Mentats are god-like with the Chemist perks. Zero to hero. In Fallout, winners do use drugs!
Why, making Berry Mentants and tracking targets through walls, of course!
