Settlement Lighting?

Post » Sat Dec 05, 2015 1:27 pm

So I built a bunkhouse at Sanctuary, two levels, 18 beds, and I thought I'd add some lighting. Well I put a small generator behind the building. Added a connector to the building and ran a wire between the generator and connector. I went inside and added four basic lights hanging from the ceiling. Well only one of the lights actually came on, the other's just hung there dim. The only one that lit up was the one closest to the outside wall where I hooked up the power.

Now I thought that if you hooked power to a building that all the walls, ceilings, etc. carried that power. If that isn't how it works then how do I get power throughout my building? And how to do I hook things to to the power?

Thanks.

each connector only covers about 12' cubic feet. You need to run those connectors around the house to cover it all

From what I have seen the lights have to be within a certain distance from the connector to work. ???

Well that's ... going to look ridiculous. I'll just have to forget it then. Thanks.

I'd also like to know why we can't build non-powered light sources like lanterns and fire barrels.

or you could install a mod from the nexus that gives each power coupling infinite radius, so you would only need one light switch to light up all of Santuary. Granted, difficult if you're on a console..

but yeah, in vanilla lights work within a small radius of the power joint. So you need to wire them up like every 10 feet (or on every wall on a large room) to get it lit. A bit crap really.

Do it like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kx3olhfa7cswtnm/Fallout4%202015-11-27%2021-47-26-58.jpg?raw=1. Put a power generator at one corner of the house, and put connectors on the sides of the house. If you have two floors, put the connectors on the middle part of the wall to cover both floors. If you have a bigger house, put another set of power generator and connectors at the other corner of the house. If you have only one floor, put the set on the roof. A small one-floor house needs only one power generator and one or two connectors on the roof to provide lighting for the whole house. Doesn't look ridiculous at all. The key is to find a way to use as few generators and connectors as possible to cover the house.

watch how you place generators. From what Ive heard the noise affects settlers happiness.

best to group and string them together in an enclosed room of sorts. Plus if theyre protected by walls, etc you wont have to repair them after raider attacks

Running the connectors can be done quite neatly if you have the resources. You just have to get creative if you want to hide the wires from view

It's possible to build it in a way that doesn't look ridiculous at all. It just requires a bit of planning rather than simply jumping in and starting to build things wherever. Electrical conduits and connectors have a sphere of influence of two wall sections in every direction. If you install the conduits right at the seam between two floors, you'll get power two walls up, down, left, and right from that point. So with some careful planning you can power a whole building with minimal materials and without it looking like some ridiculous nest of wires. This can take some time to get good at. The first time I tried wiring up a building it ended up being a disaster. It was just a huge rats nest of wires everywhere. I ended up scrapping the whole thing and starting fresh. Now I have basically all of Sanctuary wired up and it looks really clean.

Good to know. I'll have to make a generator shack in the corner to house them all.
