Is there a way to turn on the old style of auto saving?

Post » Sat Dec 05, 2015 9:48 pm

The method used in the likes of Skyrim and Fallout 3... Where you just get ONE continuously overwritten/updated auto save? Like back in the olden days of Fallout 3 I had a grand total of TWO saves for the game, my manual save that I overwrote from time to time, and the auto save that overwrote itself... Now every single auto save is its own full size save on the disk.

I am rocking an old 60gb SSD for my operating system drive, and the game does not let me change the directory for saves (which defaults to C Drive/Documents)... So it is very tight for space and my game's saves are upwards of 10-11mb each at this point... So after a few hours of playing, it writes over a gigabyte of new saves...

Its rather annoying needing to go in and delete most of them manually after every single play session to avoid running out of space. I don't want to turn off auto saving because it is helpful and I am forgetful with manual saves...

So yeah, is there like an INI setting or something I can modify somewhere or does the old method no longer exist?

Thanks

I'm in the same boat as you with 60gb SSD and always struggling for space. Though to be honest I'd rather have to go in and delete the older half of save files than just having one or two that become corrupted

I manually save, andI keep ten saves, overwriting the bottom one each time. That way you don't get too may. If you depend on autosaves and quick saves, you may find yourself in trouble at some point such as if a glitch rears it's ugly head. It's best to have some manual saves IMO

Having been playing Skyrim and replaying FO3 prior to the release of FO4, I can tell you that I really miss the numbered Saves as well as the Autosaves. Or, rather, I should say that I dislike that Autosaves are labeled exactly the same way as a hard Save. Looking at a list of "Commonwealth" Saves really does NOT tell me just where I was when those Saves were made. I hope the next patch reintroduces Save numbering.

What is missing is an indicator that shows you which saves are autosaves.

I sm also suspicious that the autosaves are overwriting my own saves, but I haven't figured it out yet.

Maybe because when I save, I overwrite an autosave (since there is no way to tell), and then it overwrites mine?

Amyway, I agree, it needs some tweaks.

This was done as overwriting the Autosave files would cause corruption after a time. Not everyone would have this issue, but enough did that it was finally, thankfully set up to create new slots on each save. I am hoping that we never have to give someone the bad news that their one autosave covering 100's of hours of the game is no longer usable.

If you only have a a 60GB, you should really upgrade it, 250GB for $78 and 500GB for $147. Cloning your existing drive to a new one is beyond easy.

Or, just move the location of the My Documents Folder to a platter drive, then they won't be on your SSD

Any of these solutions takes less than 5 minutes to do, not counting shipping times from Amazon.

Also, might want to move your Temp Folders and Internet Caches to a platter drive. Having those on the SSD is not doing the drive any favors either. I will let you google how to do that.

I'm pretty certain that ALL Autosaves are entirely new Saves. Which will be a problem for people with hard drives <500 Gb. I just looked at my FO4 games Saves folder. After 222 hours of gameplay, I've got @700 Saves that are averaging >5 Mb each. The total right now is 3.1 Gb. I imagine that by late game, Saves will be averaging >15 Mb each. If I play FO4 as much as I've played Skyrim -- 3530 hours so far -- the total Save space will be HUMONGOUS. Seeing that folder makes me realize that my 1 Tb hard drive won't be adequate. [Yeah, I know that I can go in and manually delete older Saves. But you would think that Beth would 'fess up and admit that Save-deleting will be necessary.]

The saves are numbered if you look in your documents folder. Manual deletion is hardly tedious, just highlight. Don't try to do it in game.

I also filled up several gb of saves in my first week. But I also backtracked several times with my saves so really it was a new oppertinity I would not have had if I just had 2 or 3 saves on the go.

You miss my point: I want to see each Saves ID# _in_ the game. Tracking down the FO4 Save folder and deleting Saves to free up space on the hard drive is something I would do when I am NOT playing the game. In game, I would be quitting where I am at to go back to an earlier specific point in time. That's hard to do when all you see are a dozen or more Saves labeled "Commonwealth", and several of those are actually Autosaves, and you don't know which are which. If the hard Saves were numbered and the Autosaves were labeled "Autosave", it would make it MUCH easier to find the specific Save you want to Load.
