Concern for over heating!

Post » Mon Dec 07, 2015 8:09 am

Some games tax our systems more then others. When i put my mass effect 1 disc into my (Last generation 360 console, before Xb1) playing the game for an hour warped the cooling fans causing a loud repetative ticking sound. Until it cooled down. (I also played Until dawn (Awesome Game BTW) for six hours before my game, then console locked up, I'm assuming it was heat related).

Given the shear size of Fallout 4. How severely will it tax the PS4 and or Xbox 1 systems? How often can we expect Heat related malfunctions? (I've got my fingers and toes crossed that this won't happen, but still)? Has bethesada taken this into consideration? Or is it a Playstation/Microsoft oversight while trying to make a slimmer console?

...I have seen some real "how should we know" questions come up, but this one...this one gets gold star, man.

That's like a thing we figure out after release.

Ya i know its obviously an over sight on PS/MS part. But is there a way for the studios to keep this in mind when making their game?

My FO:NV crashes at least twice an hour on a good hour on my ps3. Not sure if that is heat related or simply game instability. But my FO3 can go for five to six hours without issue on my ps3. If you think about it there is alot of stuff being processed all at once in an open world game!

I had this issue with heat. I bought a Nyko Xbox 360 cooler and blow the dust out of the unit a few times a month. Solved the problem. Easy to install. Amazon has them with prime shipping.

Many early X360s had cooling issues related to the heat sink compound on the processor becoming less effective over time (and due to extended periods of heating). Go look up RED RING OF DEATH. Pretty sure MS learned it's lesson with this issue and there won't be an issue with XB One (I have no idea about Sony).

No game company SHOULD have to consider this issue when designing a game. A game console should be able to run 24/7 for YEARS at full out 100% CPU / GPU usage without failing (given reasonable ambient temp range and cooling vents not being blocked or dirty). This is 100% a hardware design issue that the console manufacturer is 100% responsible for (sans user environmental issues that can attribute to overheating).

For a moment I thought this thread was:

'Concern for over eating!'

(I nearly put my nachos down...)

My XB1 has handled Dragon Age Inquisition and The Witcher 3 perfectly well, I have no concerns about this...

Yeah I'm willing to bet the issues OP was having were the infamous heat sink issues throwing RROD's all the time. The other part about FO3/NV crashing was just that, the game was crashing.

Absolutely no idea how it will perform on consoles so far. Myself I havent owned a console since the N64/PS1 days.

If you're playing on PS3 then that has a lot of issues in general with a lot of cross-platform games, not just Bethesda's work. PS4 doesnt seem to have that problem, so you should be in the clear. Personally I would get a big fancy gaming PC to push the game as far as you can with mods, but then that blue-LED lit monster I have on my desk right now is like triple the price of a PS4, so I can see how people don't want to triple their money not so they -can- play Fallout 4, but just to play it -better-.

Heat management on the new consoles is much better than their predecessors. The Xbox One by far has the best heat ventillation out of the two consoles as Microsoft wanted to prevent another RRoD incident. It might also help if you don't leave your console on 24/7.

Agreed - I don't have a console, but that surprised me (hadn't heard that those had temp problems...I mean aren't games especially designed for those (unlike a lot of clunky ports to PC...like say Assassin's Creed Unity which taxes my PC extremely (the same PC is able to run all other games I own on maximum settings and is more powerful than the "next gen" (should be crap-gen...good PC-Hardware from 2012 is more powerful than those things!) consoles (at least on paper!)) - if you make a closed system (you can't upgrade consoles after all or switch out parts) you are responsible for that system being able to run 24/7 (if it doesn't it's not the users fault...it's like with laptops (I own a laptop as well and that thing had heat issues from day one -.-))

greetings LAX

I haven't seen the gaming news sites covered in "OMG, Consoles overheating & failing" articles like they were during the previous gen. So I'm not sure where the worry about overheating comes from. Especially since, while I do think it looks great, Fallout 4 isn't Crysis.... why would it, in particular, overheat your console?

(And isn't everything loaded onto the hard-drive these days? Less heat than a constantly-whirring DVD?)

Game consoles have to have adequate ventilation in order to prevent overheating. If you have them locked in a cabinet with a front door and no opening in the back, then chances are, your console is going to fail. Good, adequate ventilation is absolutely crucial.

I've been playing with my slim 360 for 5(ish) years now with no issues. I had overheating on the OG 360 all the time. I leave my slim on for 12 hours sometimes lol

I've played the Witcher 3 on my PS4 for like 6 hours straight before without any problems so I think we'll be fine
