I was thinking about it earlier. The quest to find Brandis and how he's always declared not fit for duty despite his voice actor portraying him as clear-headed on the Prydwen. Maybe originally there was way more range of choice in the BoS - you choose the elder. And, if you follow Maxson's orders to the letter, Brandis was the replacement battle brother?
