Oblivion is almost five years old, which is ANCIENT. The only :"5800" it knows about was a truly horrible Geforce FX 5800. Your system is outside of the launcher's database, so it cannot make the correct auto-selection of the graphics. You must set them to suit yourself. Italicized portion added after the original reply.

The FXes were so truly terrible, that the very first patch that was made was particularly intended to add an "Ultra Low Quality" setting that some of the FXes could sort of run the game with; it was very muddy looking, both blurry, and pixilated. If the game wants to set you there, you do not have to accept that setting. You can set the image quality to suit yourself. Chances are good that you have another problem that makes the game run slowly, however. It was never intended to support either Vista or Windows 7, although many gamers have had success using those. It is sensitive to a ton of the garbage that currently is popular as background crap in Windows 7 systems, like several of the AV products that are incompatible, and Xfire, and just all kinds of "social" sites' software that cause interference.

Exit Oblivion, then try renaming or deleting the oblivion.ini file (...\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini)

Run Oblivion from the launcher and select high. This will get the graphics where the belong.

The address the slow running. For starters, Experimentally, try turning off the audio

To test, in the ...\Documents\mygames\oblivion\Oblivion.ini file locate:

bMusicEnabled=1
bSoundEnabled=1

And change both 1's to 0

In the launcher, set the resolution, and whatever else is offered, to where you want it. Can certainly run on medium settings, and maybe even high.....

What version of the game do you have? Not sure which version of the launcher had the cool little buttons.

IIRC they were added in the first patch and remained after that -- (since the first patch added the Ultra Low setting for the FX series) -- Also be sure you are running the launcher.exe from the HDD and not the DVD since the one on the DVD does not have the presets to select !

GOTY with the last official patch (Version 1.2.0416) without mods.

And I'm running the launcher from hd.

It works! Thanks a lot!

Funny that detects as Very Low Quality, but I turned off V-Sync and set to Medium and now it's running fine.

Thanks a lot guys!

The reason was already covered in the thread. Geforc FXes were the reason. They were numbered 5200-5500-5600 etc. and were horrible. The launcher's elderly database could only match the "5600" part of the Radeon's name.

But you must agree with me that it is funny.

It checks the number on the card name, but not the hardware itself?!

Actually that is pretty normal for autodetect programs they just have a list of cards and settings and when it is installing it checks the list to see which settings to use -- unfortunately in this case it see 5xxx and the only card on the list that match are the old Nvidia FX5xxx series so uses the settings for them ! Fortunately with the launcher presets it is easy enough to reset correctly so that the game works properly !

Yeah It's true... I enabled my secondary video card (a Radeon 4250) the launcher says the video card is unknown, and sets the settings to medium quality. lol :)

What? So because an Ati that has a similar model number to an old crappy nvidia series from years back is somehow making his game run slow? Come on dude, that's ridiculous.

My response regarded the graphical quality being really bad, nothing at all to do with frame rates. Read what I said once again.
