Any tipps how gain the biggest profit from settlements? On what should be focused at most to gain max profit, ressource and caps wise?

My stores barly create money, maybe its related to my low number of settlers. In all settlements combined i have around 40-45 people but every now and then my stores create like 30-40 caps and every now and then 2-3 water bottles.

So every advice is welcome
