Getting a Clue > Investigate Kellogg's House

During the events of this mission, a secret button appears on a desk and after that point the desk did not allow access to any previously stored items.

I was storing all of my valuable junk and collectibles in that desk and now i cannot access them. Unfortunately, the previous save is 4 hours earlier.

Not super excited to turn Fallout 4 on again to replay the last 4 hours, and i will always feel a little cheated if I cannot find a way to get access to those items in the desk.

Note: i did have an autosave in Diamond City after starting Getting a Clue > Investigate Kellogg's House (before entering the house), but when i turned off the game, rebooted my computer (full rage quit), and returned to that save file, it was corrupted (but still playable). Dogmeat appeared outside even though he was not my companion and i was able to present him with the clue that I should not have found yet considering I had not entered the house. I entered the house, and now that save was overwritten by one that says Kellogg's House instead of Diamond City; even though I chose not to save.

Hoping there is a simple fix because I have heard people were able to lockpick the door before this mission and not have their desk turn into a useless button that no longer allows you to access its stored contents.

Why would you put your junk in that desk? Of ALL the desks in the whole commonwealth, you chose to put your valuables in there? I mean... what?
