Rotate, slide and lift workshop constructs, who knew?

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 6:36 am

I've played this game about 100 hours now and I just learned that you can rotate, slide and lift objects while in workshop mode. Holy Carp! I must have wasted hours upon hours trying to meticulously manipulate beds, fences, walls and other whatnot from bizarre and cumbersome perspectives. On a controller, while an object is selected in workshop mode the left and right triggers rotate the object (aim and bash). If you hold the 'A' button (I guess that wold be the 'E' key on the keyboard), while the object is selected, the left stick (direction keys) will slide the object side to side or front to back. The right stick (the mouse?) will actually lift or drop the object - though this doesn't seem to work with every object or every time.

I hadn't a clue this could be done. Did anyone else know about this?

Lol.

According to the xbox game hub I have a total play time of 5days and 20 hours and didn't know I could raise or drag them with the A button.

I wondered that too.

Maybe he just accidentally posted on the wrong thread?

Wish I'd known this sooner. Was pulling my hair out and just about ready to give up on doing any serious building.
Thanks!

It was posted here many times already and is shown on pretty much any settlement building video or guide ;)

But don't despair, this game is so large that you can be pretty much sure you have missed something no matter how long you play.

Excuse me while I check the documentation that came with the retail boxed version I bought...

Oh wait, there is no documentation. No instructions.

It is by pure luck that I found this out. What happens to the 10's of thousands of customers who never come to these boards?

I'm sure their lives won't be adversely affected. When all is said and done, it's still just a game

There is a lot more to it than you mention. In building my standard structures, I lay down 12 - 16 floor sections on posts. I select the entire structure by holding down the a key (console) then wiggle a stick until they all show selected. Then I fit the flooring to the terrrain (rotate, then raise or lower) until no part of it intersects the ground or obstacles. Then I am free to build my next few levels. First floor I use for shops and crafting. Second floor is sleeping. Top floor is power and defense.

I'm sure their playing experience will. It's the topic here after all, right. Not every day, real life problems.

Good to know! I only figured out rotating thanks to a friend at school. Before that I alwaus used to look around to rotate items.

Also, what might come in handy, if you pick something up you didn't intend to, then you can simply press B (don't know the buttons for other systems) and the item will go where it last was put.

For PC:

Mouse wheel -> Distance

Hold E, Mouse wheel -> Height

Hold E, move around -> position (normal camera is still more precise though).

Hold Mouse left/F -> rotate anticlockwise

Hold Mouse right/G -> rotate clockwise

Don't forget that items clamped to each other will move, too. This means radios on top of dressers or boxes on top of desks, but can also mean furniture arrangements on top of large mats for better manoeuvrability.

Someone got really excited about 'hold A' to move all connected items around. However, A being move left, I can only assume they meant on xbox. Anyone know the PC equivalent, or could they have just been tricked by the standard clamping rules?

I saw it on a video, it's on the forum, I think was called advanced settlement techniques or some such on utube. Forum thread, forgot *shrugs* Think the guy was on pc or explained for pc and controller. Going to have to look at it again 1 of these days got an idea that needs that move whole structure trick.

Yup that's it (see post below) thanks for finding it, won't have to go digging for it now :)

Well, actually.... It's in the in-game help, that you get in the main menu after hitting Esc or whatever it is on consoles. Who knew there would helpful stuff in there, right? ;)

Thanks. Sure, I should have experimented or accidentally figured this out myself, but I didn't. The rotation ability has been very useful.
