'The Great Green Jewel of the Commonwealth'...

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 1:41 am

...Is not a great description, is it? The place is tiny. For somewhere of such great importance, referred to as the 'Great Green Jewel' and considered the largest settlement in the Commonwealth, I really think Bethesda could have done a much better job. I can't believe that in all the time Diamond City has existed, no one has had the bright idea of making a second level above the marketplace. Or maybe another level above that. Or perhaps they could have done something with the empty seating areas. Diamond City could have served as an example of what your own settlements might end up like, with many more places and people to visit. A big city (within reason) that's always exciting to come back to. Proof that humanity is rebuilding. Unfortunately, it's just a flatter Megaton.

I think I wanted to get that off my chest. It's gotten on my nerves the more I play.

Considering the place is bigger than most settlements outside of the main bases of the factions (maybe)...

The place it's set in is only so big.

Plus, it's definitely bigger than any settlement I've seen, with a lot more to offer than anywhere else. For a post-apocalyptic wasteland, I'd say it's a pretty impressive community.

Its still not big.. Like. Rivet city was bigger in my opinion even though it was spread into multiple cells..

I dont mind, though.. I mean. Im pleased the traders are close by and im not walking ages to get to one location.. Diamond city isnt THAT integral ro the game, especially if you build your own settlements

It's bigger than other settlements, so it technically adheres to the description, but it still doesn't fit my view of what a big, central hub of a region should be like in an open world RPG. Considering they placed a lot more emphasis on humanity recovering from the nukes, I think it should have had more vertical layers and such so there could be more buildings, more characters, more quests and more of a reason to fall in love with the Commonwealth.

OMG this topic agean

having HUGE city on a post apocalyptic game fail to set the tone of a place where they need to deal with Raiders Mutants and other [censored].

Plus the place is set inisde a stadium u cant have something bigger than that.

Nv was different bc the situation on the west side is different from the east side

It's Boston....have you ever had an actual conversation with anyone from Boston? If not let me tell ya...it's almost as bad. At least the residents of Diamond City have a reason for being proud of their green wall.

That's right....I said it.

My favorite pet peeve are the snob denizens who reside in the balcony area. Especially that obnoxious blonde female NPC you meet at the hair dresser when entering the city for the first time. After enduring her disparaging commentary, I went up there thinking I was going to see some really top level, ghetto fabulous shanty homes. Similar to the 2nd & 3rd level Megatron homes with TenPenny tower interiors. But all I encountered were a measly 3-4 squalid looking doors with zero foilage/planters or patio home decor on the outside.

Most settlements are, like, a single farm with one or two settlers unless you come along and plant some kind of beacon to recruit people.

Look at how much of the bleachers is just wasted as empty space. It could have been filled with more characters, shops, story lines.

A flatter Megaton - you're absolutely right. And to the naysayers, there's absolutely believable ways of making this so much more than it was within the confines of the fact that its a stadium, the fact they have to deal with raiders and super mutants, etc.

It's the same size as every Bethesda settlement since Oblivion. Just like the fact that everything in their worlds is crammed into an area the size of Manhattan, making everything be literally around the corner, and that there are a thousand bandits/monsters to every settler, you have to suspend your belief somewhat regarding size and scope of distances and population and pretend that there are a lot more people that you just never see.
