Possible to have Covenant as your home base? : Fallout 4

Finally after 80 hours finished the main quest and came across this walled in settlement and was wondering how you become an ally so you can make it your home base. The mayor keeps talking about some dan guy, but he is nowhere to be found.

Honest Dan moves around a lot inside the settlement. Haven't had issues finding him yet, but I've only done two playthroughs.

Honest Dan starts a quest. Not sure if both outcomes allow you to build at Covenant. The one where you basically wipe them out allows you to build at the location. Keep in mind that the turrets won't count as defense. Don't know how they behave when attacked, but they were at least neutral to me.

yes but options of finishing the quest allow you to build. and the turrets that are already placed will attack other attackers when attacked but unfortunately you cannot place any new turrets because your new turrets and the old turrets will attack each other especially if you wiped the settlement.

The quest in covenant bugged out on me a little, long story short - the original inhabitants are dead and their remains (all the bits I could find after the artillery strike) are in the jail cell in the main house. My New Settlers don't seem to mind too much. So if you want to use covenant but can't get through the quest to build there just massacre everyone and then search the workbench.
