How close can you go before power armor gets level locked?

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 11:46 am

Around level 31 I decided to go for the X-01 power armor, so I went to South Boston Military checkpoint to pick it up. It turned out to be a full T-60, even though I had never been there before. I had cleared Big John's Salvage, not too far from there, but South Boston Military Checkpoint was not even on the map before I went there on level 31. Also tried a different power set armor that was partially submerged (near Neponset Park): Again, full T-60, no X-01 parts. I reloaded a bunch of times, but it made no difference. I then went to the Abandoned Shack and 35 Court, and both of them had X-01 armor (only 35 Court had a full set, the shack never gave more than four pieces).

I assume the Abandoned Shack and 35 Court gave me X-01 because they are "inside", meaning that a new map had to be loaded for the first time when I went in there. The armors stored out in the open don't work because you're apparently not allowed to go anywhere near that location before you're at a sufficiently high level. Does anyone know how this works? How close can you go to a location before you're locking the stuff that spawns there?

I don't think it's an absolute guarantee you'll get the X01 just because you're high enough level at most locations..it's just becomes a very good chance. That's only what I read tho, haven't tested it.

As far as radius - it could be a cell loading thing. If you're close enough to load the cell, I mean. But I'm not sure - let alone how big that radius would be, since I don't know how big each "cell" is. A good distance around the player, seems like, however, based on HDD lurching and what I can see moving/reacting in the distance as I walk around.

Yes, I also heard that, but I reloaded about a dozen times and got T-60 every time, so unless the probability was very low at level 31, it was probably already set to T-60 at that time.
Btw, I'm now at level 41, and I still haven't gone to either of those armor locations I mentioned (South Boston Military Checkpoint and the submerged one). I will try it again and see if it's still a T-60. I don't really need the X-01 anymore, so it's more out of curiosity at this point.

I did some experimentation at the Abandoned Shack, because that location gave me randomized pieces of X-01 (anywhere from 2-4 pieces, and it varied which pieces I got). If I reloaded to before entering the shack basemant (where it loads a new map), I got a different set of X-01 pieces every time. However, when I saved immediately after entering the basemant, I always got the same X-01 pieces. So at least in that case, it would appear that the RNG does its thing when you enter the basemant, not when you interact with the armor frame.

I had a strange experience with finding some power armor, I found a set of T-51 at the top of one of the skyscraqers and since I was wearing my best X-01 power armor, I dropped straight to the ground from the top and fast traveled away, unequipped my power armor and flew back (no fast travelling from Settlements because it causes a bug).......I re-entered the building travelled to the top floor and the armor was now a MKIII X-01.

Did you interact with the armor the first time you found it? Sometimes the armor plates change when you open the transfer window (it happened a lot when I was experimenting with the X-01 armor in the shack).

X-01 is the best armor in the game and it spawns in at lvl 28 with better mods as you level up from there.

yeah I've got mine fully levelled with a jetpack, carry capacity, tesla fists and shark paint, have over 70 cores. dont use other suits apart from a T60 Lead lined one for the glowing sea. all my others a lined up in all the different paint jobs with cores removed so settlers dont use them and them I've got about 5 or 6 incomplete sets painted in shark paint with cores left in so settlers can use them if base gets attacked.

I unlocked the door, but didn't touch......I recently found a T-45 power armor set at 50+ that I missed near one of the first locations I visited, apparently I was near enough to lock it into T-45 without ever seeing it. Anyway I already have four T-51 after finding four in a row, so its all good, currently I have four X-01, four T-51, two T-60, one Raider and two T-45. I probably have the spare parts to put together another T-45 and several T-60 if I ever find or buy extra frames.

I pretty much use my leaded MK VI X-01 so really the rest are just show pieces........I'm really going to have to spend some time moving them to a new location since the Red Rocket is now overcrowded by the settler population since its my main trading and transport hub.

Once you're in view distance of the armor, it's definitely locked in. Loading into an interior cell would definitely lock it in. I'm not sure how close you can get to exterior cell though before locking the armor in. Just seeing the area isn't enough. If the armor is in view distance, it's locked. There might be some in-between though that also locks... some point where a cell 'fully loads' and generates any random elements required.

If you're trying to get the most X-01 parts possible, it would pay to avoid exploring as much as you can before leveling into the 30s. I'm unsure if higher levels give a greater chance. Of course, if you only care about having a single full X-01 suit, you don't need to worry at all. There is one sure thing full X-01 spawn regardless of level.

Not in this case as I opened the door, fought the two robots and took a close look at the T-51, I only didn't click on it because I wanted to leave my best armor in a marked location.......which is why I was so surprised that it had changed to a X-01, I assume its a bug but anyway its now back at base sporting a hot rod red paint job since its my lowest quality X-01 (the other three or IV to VI) so its way done the queue.

At Lv. 39 I found my first X-01 in a guard post south of the Airport (an early Brotherhood quest takes you there). If you follow the road south from the military base you'll run into it- it's the road that curves around the bay, eventually swinging back up to the airport, but the guard post is vcose to the military base.

I'm at level 57 and found the court 35 armor early on (maybe low 20's), it wasn't x01 because I was too low from what I understand. But now, all the other spots that should have the x01 are either t60 or 51b. Is my whole game glitched and I won't be able to find it now?
