how to reduce # of saves?

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 7:48 am

so i dont mind that the game autosaves everytime i do something but what is midly annoying is that it creates a new save everytime. so if i make a bad choice i have no idea what save to use that will take me back to the point before i made the bade choice. is there a way to have the game only keep 3 autosaves so that its manageable to file through them?

id like to finish the game siding with the railroad, institute, and brotherhood but i dont want to do 4 complete playthroughs of the game.

.. .. wonder how your game works, but mine only keeps 3 or 4 autosaves. It's easier to check in the actual save folder where those are labeled as autosave in the filename, unlike normal saves.

Also. You can supposedly make manually named save file if you save with the console command (if playing on pc, that is) to mark the turning points in your game, so it'll be easier to return to them later.

The autosaves over writes after 6 so just delete them every so often so they are fresh saves instead of over writes and delete your regular saves every so often as well for the same reason.

I have currently over 100 saves with no detrimental effects, I don't think there is any particular reason to keep the save amount low if it doesn't cause any undue delay, or strain on disk space. Same for autosaves, pretty sure the game just creates new file and deletes the oldest file automatically. Instead of editing the same files. Need to check the file creation times to verify though.

Yeah I used to do a rotating set of about a dozen saves in Beth games (saving over the oldest one), but this year I went to just making a new manual save each time. I clear out the folder every so often, because the FO4 save/load menu seems to start to chug when there are 50+ saves in there.

naming your character changes your save name.

Sadly I can't help there, it's only something I read elsewere and have not tested personally. In earlier games the command was simply 'save filename' but it is possible it's not carried over to this game, hence why I said "supposedly".

I imagine you could also change the saved filename manually in the folder..

Hmm, if it's like previous Beth games, it should be the console command "save ". If that's not working, not sure what it is.

I believe the actual syntax of the command is SAVEGAME , for example SAVEGAME SUE001.

That's how I do it, anyway.

Delete them? It's not like it's hard to do.
