Named save games in PC

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 6:04 pm

I'm all for console support regardless of whatever perceived downsides that come with it (to a PC player). However, is it really so hard to provide a way to set the name of saved games. I have like 50 games named "commonwealth" which gives absolutely no information where, how or why I saved the game.

What could this possibly have to do with console gamers? We can rename weapons and armor, what do you think the limitations on naming a [censored] save would be? I hate all the pathetic attempts at jabs from PC users. You look ridiculous

Try to understand we're a bit annoyed by having our PC game limited due to console-focused design. And this happens, even if you're not going to accept it.

Easy there tiger. I think the original OP was merely trying to understand Bethesda's reason for removing naming of save files, and probably came to the conclusion that - lacking a KB - Bethesda felt that naming files was not necessary for consoles, and therefore the game in general. No one is jabbing at console players here, m'kay?

Could you name saves in Skyrim? Without the console that is. I can't remember.

But consoles aren't lacking a keyboard? How do you think they name weapons and armor? OP just taking an opinionated misinformed jab at consoles for no real reason. Pretty pathetic

Just about every PC game that has come out in the past 20 years has the ability to name our saves. However, games that are focused on consoles typically don't (likely because most console players don't have a keyboard).

Again, I'm all for console support (mostly because some games would never see the light of day without console players), in fact I'm fine with the focus being on consoles. I'd just like to name my save. However, the first poster offered a way to do it, so I'm all good here

Pretty lame excuse you're grabbing for considering a virtual keyboard is used in the first 5 minutes of the game to name your character. And virtual keyboard aren't a brand new revelation either. If they wanted to do it, they had no restrictions on doing it at all.

I'm not a dev so I'm not going to pretend like I know why they choose to omit it. And I certainly wouldn't place the blame on a group I apparently know nothing about. I've been able to name characters with virtual keyboards for 20+ years lol it's not a restriction of hardware.

I never said it was a restriction of hardware, I said typically most console players don't have a keyboard, not that they don't exist, and I stand by that statement. Also if you notice I said "likely": indicating I don't know for sure but it seems a plausible reason. Not sure why you're getting all hostile. There is ample evidence supporting the theory that naming your saves is not abundant in console games and quite abundant in PC games. Now we have console focus on games and the ability to name saves isn't there (off the top of my head this includes skyrim and the mass effect series). Is it not reasonable to suppose this is the cause?

You could also rename the files in the save folder. Setup a bat file with this command:

@echo off ren *commonwealth* *yourcharactersname* exit

But again, a keyboard has NOTHING to do with it. What about that aren't you understanding? Virtual keyboard have been used for decades to do things in game. If you're gonna use a reason at least use something like "maybe their file system doesn't like named saves" or something that doesn't sound like an ignorant rant from an old man. And no, your original post did not say "likely". Four words in you're blaming consoles for something you're just guessing at, while being misinformed about the use of virtual keyboards apparently

You keep bringing up virtual keyboards as if I don't know what they are and that they exist. I'm fully aware of the existence and use of virtual keyboards. Not sure why you keep bringing it up.

EDIT: You have no theory as to why console games typically lack a named save. My theory is that it's because keyboards are somewhat rare. Either way it's true that name saves are rare in console and ubiquitous in pc. Now we have games focused on console and ported to PC and they lack named saves. Is it really that far of a stretch to assume that's the cause?

I'm drawing a blank on recalling when any Bethesda game allowed you to name saves (outside the console save command). I get the convention is less than helpful, but it has NOTHING to do with consoles. Some here need to get over their PC MasterRace BS and move on.

NOTE: I am a PC player.

That being said, Bethesda games also never had a built in method to manage alternate characters (in games where I have made hundreds of them). THATs worth complaining about (and also nothing to do with consoles).

The part that bugs me is that the auto-generated names (of the actual files, not the one you see in the save dialogue) are now vastly more complicated.

My old FO3 saves have names like "Save 194 - Lara, My Megaton House, 50.11.49.fos" Very easy to know what that file is for. The new ones, have all sorts of additional strings of numbers all over them. Much less clear.

(but yeah, Bethesda games haven't had an option to name saves as long as I can remember. This is nothing new. And certainly not another piece of ammo on the moronic "It's all the consoles fault! " bandwagon.)

I'm not sure why you're think that this has anything to do with "PC Masterrace BS". I like to name my save games (and Yes, Kiralyn, I agree that character management would be a huge boon. I've been manually handling that). Perhaps I shouldn't have blamed consoles since that seems to have hijacked the point of the thread. The point is, I'd like to have named saves, regardless of why we don't have them now.

Consoles limit the PC, and they limit named PC saves. Control yourself
