I saw this video last weekend and took a few pointers from it. Very nice.
However, an addendum to the clipping/treehouse. If you intend to run power, make sure your connectors are established and wires are run between them before setting. Otherwise, wires will fail to connect because they won't cross the obstruction. Luckily, you can re-establish the foundation blocks, move your entire build, and attach them.
I highly recommend you remove all items that are storing things first. Some items don't "bind" to the structure and when you move it, they'll remain floating, which makes it extremely difficult to reset.
Some other tips I've picked up which may help you:
-Before starting a major build, save your game. Whatever you do, don't break down items as you'll lose more than what it cost to build it. Store it, even if you don't intend to use it for your build. If your structure doesn't turn out the way you want, that's where reloading the save comes in.
-Keep at least one side of the building completely flat, and at least one story flat on one side (two if you have a 4 story building). When running power, this will help tremendously when running connectors. Connectors cover 2x2x2 grids. When placing, put a connector on one edge, skip a block, and continue the length of the building. Repeat for every other floor.
-Half walls count as a 1x1x1 grid. If you have a 4x4 floor plan, and add these to the outside for asthetics, the center of the room won't receive power. Place a "break" between half walls so you can run connectors vertically. Also, this break actually looks more asthetic.
-I didn't know this at all, but you do NOT need to use a prefab to build your house. Just throw down a floor, add some walls, a roof, and voila! Instant house. This allows for open spaces without all those pesky support beams. Yeah, I just learned this a couple of days ago.
-To prepare your settlement for raids, place walls around the immediate settlement, but not the green boundary line! The idea here is to keep your settlement boundaries tight, as spwans can happen within the walls. This limits the risk. Then, you can put defense turrets inside the walls, and they make quick work of any attackers spawning in the walls. When your settlement grows, you can expand the walls outward for more space.
-Gates are your worst enemy in a settlement. NPCs will go through them even if there isn't a reason for them to do so. Not sure why, but the gates won't be closed by those who open them. If you must use a gate, be sure it's in an area where the general population can look after it.
-Watch your exp gain! Yeah, this has a Skyrim affect where leveling up while building can bite you as enemies scale to your level. Build a bit, kick some tail, build some more.
That's my short list.
PS: don't forget to save before you build!
Well.......fiddlesticks. Watching this video has shown me that I've made a "A-One" mess of Sanctuary. I cannot think of anyway that I could have been more wasteful and inefficient!
(On console) I blew a decomposed skeleton out of my house with a rocket launcher as the damn thing kept clipping through my floor and scaring the bejesus out of me, except the damn thing reset itself back to where it started! Convinced there is some sort of Poltergeist activity going on....
That foundation block is super helpful to know, and so is the "treehouse" trick. I saw a video of an amazing build in Sanctuary where the guy had put a second story on the main house (the one with the crafting benches outside). I had no idea how he did it. Maybe he used that trick.
Another trick is that you can move the vehicle right outside of Hangman's Alley by selecting a turret (in workshop mode) and using it to push against the vehicle.
I have not found any other objects which this works with, but I have not tried very much, either.
OMFG!!
That clipping trick is ......................awesome!
Kudos all-round, absolute game changer! Soon as the 'teleporting baddies' are patched, I may give settlements a proper look.
Thanks to the Youtuber and the OP.
I've been carrying the bodies and dumping them outside the building area (green circle) they haven't come back so far and it is realistic even if annoying heh
I've started using Industrial Water Pumps to generate Purified Water to sell, I'm trying to keep it within the scope of my settlements so looking back at Fallout 3 I consider the water setttlement to be the equivalent of the purifier and I'm not just going to start spamming loads of them everywhere I can. From a income POV as I've done most of the quests I do view this as ok so long as I dont go silly with them.
My farms are developed a little more, being a bit of a la-de-dah lady I've got the peasants wokring the land and I stroll in every so often and take all the goodies.
I also started fortifying The Castle, that should come along nicely now I know a lot more about how I can get objects in there.
Does anyone know how to get more industrial looking objects like Barrels or big Shipping Crates at all?
Last tip is pretty neat. Thanks. I had to settle to a tree boardwalk instead of a house because I couldn't figure it out. I'll have to give it another shot.
Thanks for sharing this, mate. It's a fantastic tips video.
For the dead bodies, if you hold A (on xbox, not sure PC equivalent) you can drag the ones you can carry out of your settlement. however, they should actually de-spawn after a few days. I know the decomposing cows at the Boathouse disappeared after an in game week of taking over the settlement. Using the turret trick helps for larger objects.... (seeing as dogmeat can move a large car but I cannot).
I would like more metal options as well, but theres no telling if BGS will expand on the settlement builder or not. It would be nice to get themes, more prefabs and metal structures. Also placable patches of dirt or dirt pots or something for those who do not want to build an outdoor farm. I would definitely like some placable dirt patches.
I've just had a similar thought myself! All those wasted resources...
I use to breakdown things that I may have spawned or whatever or messed up on... Now I store everything especially lights and generators so not to waste precious copper.
Couple questions on managing settlements, I've seen various tips and tricks but can anyone tell me?
1) Is there an easy way to abandon a settlement? I can send the settlers to another place (as long as the NPC is not fixed) but can I 'close' a settlement completely?
2) Can I reset my supply lines, or at least reassign them?
Nice video. Thank you. Showed me stuff i didn't know about
1. Some settlers can not be moved. You can kill them or use them to set up a supply line to another settlement. Theres a trick where if you can catch them at the target settlement, you can then reassign them to another supply line in effect moving their home. Ill have to look for it though.
2. Yes you can though the Build mode.
