The problem with NPCs and companions....

You know I'm the first to defend Bethesda games. When people complain about the glitches, bugs and a variety of technical issues, I say get over it! In the face of the vastness of these games, how detailed the worlds are and how utterly absorbing they are.

It's easy to overlook a few technical issues....................

But, I've been playing Bethesda's games since Morrowind, and I have to admit the technical issues are starting to get to me!
It's great that Fallout has so many systems in play, but when they simply don't work, it starts become a tiresome!

- I had kitted my settlers out with the best weapons! Which is great to be able to do that right? When the Raiders come - they'll be ready!!!
Only it doesn't work.... When the base gets attacked they revert to using whatever cheap ass weapons they arrived with, using switchblades, sticks and pipe pistols, none of the gear I gave them and told them to use...

So what's the point???

- same issue with Companions - I gave Preston a powerful shotgun because I wanted him to be more useful and effective in a skirmish. When he has his laser rifle, he can't hit crap. Only the same thing happens - even though I gave him the shotgun and told him to use it, he pulls out his laser rifle which by no means appropriate when enemies are up close!!! And he just gets his ass kicked!

- Another issue , I can't tell him to hang back and use him as a sniper whilst I deal with the close quarter combat. Why? Because if you tell a Companion to STAY for some reason it effectively immobilises them! They neither attack nor defend themselves, they simply stand there! They go into a coma like state?? That never happened in Skyrim?

My point is, it's great that Fallout has all these options, but if none of it works properly or at all, then is doesn't add up to much!

Don't even get me started on respawning dead ghoul bodies in my Co-op Base.. Grrrrrr!

Other open world games are catching up, and everything mostly works, they don't have half of these issues.

Don't get me wrong, man I love these games, but seriously, these issues are starting to becom harder to forgive!

Hopefully maybe they can patch some of these issues!

Im not blaming you, just double checking: did you give em any ammo? You know, NPCs use shotgun shells to fire a shotgun too.

This.

NPCs only have unlimited ammo for their default weapon, besides that, you have to give them ammo for any weapon you give them or else they can't use it.

Also you need to tell them to use a specific piece of equipment as well. You can give them the ammo and the better armor, but unless you "equip" in the menu then they won't use it.

Also played Beth games since Morrowind, started the Fallout series with F2 and as a fan you shouldn't defend bugs and other technical problems. otherwise you end up as those "fans" who claim that Morrowind, F2 and NV are the best games evar! as opposed to the buggy, crashy unfinished mess that they are with the final official patch.

Praise what is good and improved but adress and loathe the bad.

Function over form. We just have to wait patiently for the patches to roll in.

Beth are awful at bugs and bad functionality but at least they aren't as bad as Obsidian tend to be.

Yep, lol. Default weapons don't need ammo for companions. You can do the same for settlers I believe but you need to give the settler's ammo for the gun regardless. They don't have a default kit.

Same as in F3, F4, F1 and 2, Skyrim. Same old, same old.
