Assign Job Names to Settlers.

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 2:11 pm

It is very hard to tell what each settler is suppose to be doing because there name stays "Settler".

When you assign a settler to garden then there name should be changed to "Gardner" or "Field Hand" of something like this.

When you assign a settler to the defense platforms then there names should be changed to something with "Defender" in it. ( Artillery Defender, Ground Defender or Platform Defender.)

When you assign a settler to 1 of the stores then there name should be changed to that store name or some such.

The supply caravan person has there name change to "Provision" or some such so all settlers with a job should have the name changed to that job so we can tell what they should be doing.

Now if there is already a way to do this in game then please let me know how.

The AI needs to be fixed where any settler with a job needs to be doing that job instead of just standing around all day.

I'd be happy with defender, farmer, provisioner, scrapper, and merchant.

I've resorted to dressing my settlers up in different clothes to remind me what their job is but yeah, your right. Job titles would be better.

provisioners do say provisioner somewhere dont they? You can name their gun or give them identifying hats or outfits. I dont bother though and let it be sloppy and unfilled. People sometimes fill in farming roles with nothing else to do but not always immediately.

I want to be able to label them like you can label weapons.

I was dressing them in job-specific outfits, but it went to hell when new arrivals were showing up dressed the same. I had to turn off almost all the recruitment beacons and institute pretty drastic & fascist population controls to keep it straight.

In addition to the clothes, I give tato farmers a tato in their inventory, corn farmers corn, etc. For multiple rows of crops with multiple farmers, I put one, two, three fenceposts, whatever, in front of the crops to number them, and give the farmers one, two, three of those items to try and show who's assigned to what.

It's a pain, but it works until you have dead guys from a raid and have to figure out who got killed and what their job was.

I would name everyone "F@#% boy" or "B#@&%" depending on if they were male or female

If this was automatic depending on their job, like provisioner currently is, I'd be happy with that. Obvious job names for obvious jobs, Settler for the lazy nobodies not yet assigned.

I tried to clean up the spiderweb of my supply lines, and noticed that if you re-assign a provisioner, their title stays "provisioner".

Neon, that is brilliant!

I have dressed them alike and such, but the fenceposts and inventory hint is a great idea! At least until we get a re-name feature.

Artillery operators and storekeepers always seem to be manning their posts, so I can live with their generic names. But farmers aren't always farming, and guards aren't always at their guard posts. If you have a lot of farmers and guards, then yes, it can be a problem.

Assigning farmers to specific crop types can be a challenge, as the game auto-assigns settlers to crops. If you assign one manually to a mutfruit crop, the game will assign him to the mutfruit and then auto-assign him five other crops that you don't get to choose.

As long as we're complaining about settlers how about when it assigns a provisioner as the radiant quest giver, and you need to chase them all over creation to say "I took care of those ghouls for you" ?

If you are on the PC there's a way (http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/2017/?).

It's really hard to tell settlers apart because THEY ALL JUST STAND OUTSIDE DOING NOTHING. Am I the only one with this problem? Randomly I'll come back to Sanctuary and everybody will just be hanging out in one spot not doing anything

I would be satisfied if it just gave you a message that the settler has already been assigned, do you want to continue. How hard could that be??

With 25 settlements, most with 25 or more settlers, IDing the buggers is a PITA.

I use the clothing method, and also give each settler a weapon renamed according to their job(TatoFarmer1, NorthGuard, Scrapper1, etc.).

Keeping their bed assignments close to their workstation helps also, along with a space to chill.

For provisioners, I name their weapon according to their route(Pro OS-SH(Oberland Station-Sanctuary Hills.)

To provide more control over Provisioners I base them all at 2 main hubs, Taffington Boathouse and Oberland Station. That said, I still have one from early game running the route from Abernathy Farm to Red Rocket that I have never been able to find and reassign, despite camping at both locations for several days.

No, you most assuredly are not the only one.

I'm starting to use a method suggested by someone on this board which, sadly, involves assigning people from scratch.

1) buy a weapon for each settler. It doesn't really matter what it is and you're probably producing enough water to afford them

2) figure out what jobs you need done, i.e. 5 farmers, 5 shopkeepers and a scrapper.

3) name the weapons accordingly

4) build the bell and ring it to summon all your people

5) give each person a weapon and assign them their job. You'll probably need to ring the bell more than once to get them all done

From then on if you're unsure about their employment you can just trade with them and see what their job is.

Of course I'd prefer the game to have a better mechanism than this, but for now it seems like an effective workaround.

It would help if assigned settlers actually did their job at the place where they are supposed to...hunting around Sanctuary to find that one settler assigned to the weapon shop is frustrating, particularly when he or she has a couple of clones. Sure, the bell is a solution, but so would be (a) naming settlers; and (B) better settler AI behaviour.

I "think" there is a glitch with weapon dealers staying at their shop, sometimes moving the stand may fix it.

A tip for moving settlers to a new home; strip them down to their skivvies first, makes for easy ID when you go to assign them.

Great idea about custom-naming a pipe pistol or something cheap and plentiful to use as a tag. You don't even have to equip it.

I dress mine like this:

Farmers - Blue mechanic jumpsuit
Scavengers - green mechanic jumpsuit
Vendors - some type of suit and dress hat
Guards - generally some variation of leather or combat armor when it starts showing up in the game.

Another thing I've seen people do is take a weapon or armor you give them and give it a name like SueFarmerSanctuary or whatever you need it to say and you know who she or he is where they are from and what they do. (lol, ninj'd above!)

Yes, I know it's "cheating" in the eyes of the purist, but I use the console to get the clothes to dress them. Without a way to rename them in the vanilla game it was driving me insane keeping track of who had jobs and who didn't. This works very well.

Yes there are some random NPC's named 'Provisioner' that you can trade with. They usually have very bad stuff though. Seem to spawn random.

I feel the settlement system as it is now is just not advanced enough for us micro-manage settler behavior to our liking. So I often just let the game auto-assign settlers to crops, beds, etc. And I never have the need to re-assign supply lines. There are so many settlements that you can just link any two together with a route, so there seems to be no "wrong" route. The only thing I need to keep track of is newly-arrived settlers. I always equip settlers with armor, so anyone without armor is a new arrival. I need to identify the newbies so I can put them in unassigned positions.
