Fallout 4 Too Linear?

Post » Sat Dec 12, 2015 5:03 pm

Hi, I'm making this thread to ask: did anyone else feel the same way?

I just felt that there was little else other than the main quest. So little, in fact, that the main story ending leaves me feeling like there's literally nothing left to do in the game anymore. I can't find side quests to do, buildings are unrewarding to explore, etc. I wish there were more side quests, and I also wish there was more to do with settlements, such as rewards for keeping them happy. Happiness seems absolutely pointless.

It'd have been cool to have settlers behave like they do in Fallout Shelter. I just see settlements as the only thing there is to do end-game, which svcks, given that there's nothing to do with them aside from making an amazing settlement, which is fun if you use the mod to get over the size limit, but it wears out fast once you make your super fort.

I don't see how modding can fix this, a dlc perhaps could by adding in a plethora of side-quests, possibly. Thanks for reading and I'd love to hear your opinions.

Well...considering I've been playing since release day and have yet to finish the game...linear is NOT what this game is.

You can play the game forever without doing any part of the main quest. The only thing required of this game is that you exit Vault 111.

After that...

Cute, but what other things? Like I mentioned, there's a lack of side-quests, what other things are out there for you? I'm not saying there isn't, I'm just wondering. I wish I shared the same sentiment as you.

If ya find a lack it honestly sounds like ya simply haven't found them, because I have a huge list of quests on my quest log all the time, then there is exploring, hunting materials for gun mods, pimping my red rocket truckstop, heck just sit down on a couch, pull up my pip boy and display some holotape games.

a mistake you probably should avoid is finishing the game too early. there is nothing that tells you to not do it, but i found out later (and by making a secondary character) that there were some interesting things to discover (missions, items, lore) if i would've played longer on all factions.

this is a storywriting error imo. they should've given YOU as hero more importance because YOU are the only one who knows how to reach the institute. the thing that all other factions knew how you reached the institute was flat out BS too

I did spend time completing all the factions missions, except for the railroad. I even made a second playthrough where I went with the brotherhood's ending instead of the institute. And that second playthrough seems to go exactly the same as the first - there was no new side quests I happened to find, just me completing the same story all over again up until the ending. Don't get me wrong, I loved this game, I just wish I could enjoy it all over again, which doesn't seem to be possible in this game. I find that the game points you towards the minutemen intro, then you are either doing the brotherhood or main quest, then that's it. There's no side quests along the way to distract you forever before finding the quests. I also wish the minutemen had more of a presense. I made like 20 settlements, yet never saw patrols of minutemen start forming.

There is no lack of side-quests. I've played 3 characters now for at least 60 hours each, and not done the main quest line with any of them. All they do are side-quests, and most of them don't even repeat side-quests. I've been playing a character for 12 hours now, and she has 14 side-quests in her Pip-boy, and I haven't even explored much of the map. Some of those side-quests take an hour or more to finish.

Now ... if you are searching for side-quests after finished the main quest ... then a LOT of them are closed to you and disappear. Rushing the main quest actually closes a lot quests to you.

There are literally hundreds of quests in Fallout 4. Many with multiple parts that take you across the map. Many with multiple outcomes and options for completion.

You are either trolling or not looking very hard.

They aren't obviously aren't side quests if they are main quests. You're either dumb or trolling.

Seems like a massive improvement over FO 3.

I'm not sure how people are able to build up 20 settlements and finish the main quest and have been everywhere.

I've built like 5 settlements, seen half the map, and been to Diamond City. Of course my definition of building a settlement is likely very different than others...I actually post pics of my builds cause they're cool as [censored].

Some of the side-quests are related to the factions, but aren't in the main quest line. If you finish the main quest, (in any manner) you close them off.

Fallout 4 has over 140 quests and side-quests. Really. And that doesn't include unmarked quests. Look harder. Or move on to a different game and come back when DLC and the mod tools come out.

EDIT: Got the quest numbers confused with Skyrim. Corrected.

A bit of advice ... don't go to Sanctuary and talk to Preston right away. He will distract you from doing anything else with his constant settlement problems that he sends you to take care of. On the other hand, if you do do that, you will find magazine perks a lot faster.

I ended up with 43 Power Armor cores and two full racks of magazine's just from doing Preston's side quests before I finally had enough and started the game over without following him to Sanctuary.

So it's a trade off. Most people hate Preston because he gives you side quests non stop and you get distracted from doing anything else.

As for side quests, there are tons of them. Sometimes just walking around Diamond City will end up in you going on a side quest. The guards will randomly mention something and your map will be updated and off you go if you wish to.

Exploring the Witch Museum is just one example of a guard given (LOL) quest. And there are tons of side quests given by the members of each faction. The guy from the Railroad is almost as bad as Preston.

Just keep exploring. :)

Oh sorry, those side quests. As someone who's thoroughly inspected each faction, they aren't abundant, I can promise you that.

I think I see what you are doing wrong. You are hoping the game will lead you to side quests while working on the MQ. It doesn't you find them thru random exploration of the world.

Did you ever want to take a look at that big ass ship stuck on top of a building? You should.

Ever come across a sat relay tower out in the woods and notice you can raise the antenna? You should and use your radio to see if you can hear anything. Your pipboy will tell you if it pick up a local signal. Investigate it.

These are just a few tips to get you started. Reading every computer and note you come across listen to any holotapes you find will also give you ideas of places to checkout that could lead you to a side quests.

hth.
