Day Two.
Was woken in the middle of the night by a man named Malcolm Hobbs, son of a [censored] startled me so much I nearly used my new found aim to put a bullet between his eyes. He warned me about one of my bottle caps, a Sunset Sarsarapilla Star Cap. Apparently they’re valuable, and lead to some sort of treasure, sounds like nonsense to me, but he warned me that there are people who kill for them. After he relayed the message, he left without another word, creepy old bastard.
When morning came, I figured that if I was going to rid the town of Joe Cobb, I’d need more than a Varmint Rifle and a Vault Suit, so I spoke to some of the locals about any jobs that needed done, earn myself some caps. Unfortunately, there was nothing that Sunny hadn’t already taken care of, but I heard of a cave just east of the town, where coyotes frequent, travellers gone missing there a lot over the years so I could kill two birds with one stone. Check out the cave, find some valuables, and make sure the coyotes stay well clear from the town.
Well, my first exploration stint went relatively successfully, Goodsprings Cave turned up a new gun, a .357 Magnum Revolver, much more powerful than my varmint rifle, it came in handy for the 6 or 7 coyotes I found frequenting the cave. Amongst the treasure I found 3 bodies, 2 wasteland travellers and what looked like a weirdly dressed ghoul, he had a laser pistol on him too! Successful hunting, and my good deed of the day.
Coming out of the cave I couldn’t help but notice the massive cross looming on the horizon, couldn’t have been more than a couple of hundred metres away so I decided I would check it out! Halfway there I almost fell into a hole. I say a hole, it was a gigantic crater, filled with scraps of rusted vehicles and other appliances people had deemed un-needed. Already feeling pretty lucky from my early escapade, I decided to head down into the crater. At the bottom I found what looked like the remnants of a camp, some empty bottles, some leftover (rotten) food and viola, some ammo crates! My happiness was short lived however, as I felt a painful bite at the back of my leg, a coyote had managed to sneak up on me. Fending it out with a kick of my leg, I managed to grab it, throw it off me, quickly draw my new revolver, and blast it in the face. Courier 8, Coyotes 0.
After climbing out the death hole, I eventually made it to the cross, although upon reaching it, there was a engraved memorial stand reading ‘The Yangtzee Memorial’. I paused for a while and took in the view, for a wasteland, it was surprisingly calm, and actually quite soothing. Well it was until the radio on my pip boy started screaming at me. Well, I say screaming at me, it’s a radio, so it doesn’t talk but you know what I mean. At first I thought it was some horrible noises, but then I realised that it was a voice talking very loudly, oddly enough it didn’t sound like a human’s voice. It said some sort of gibberish and mentioned something about a black mountain, I figured it was just random nonsense and continued on my way. Just off the monument, was an abandoned shack nestled in among a rock face so I figured I’d check see if anyone had left behind anything useful. Nothing as exciting as a revolver, but some more ammo wouldn’t go amiss, and as it would turn out, would save my life just moments later.
They say that when you’re close to death, time moves slowly, and your life flashes before your eyes. I don’t know much about that, but when the sting of a Giant Radscorpion comes at your face and you somehow manage to roll out of the way before it pins your head up against the wall and pops it like a balloon, either you’re the luckiest guy in the wasteland, or there’s a powerful force that for some weird reason wants you to survive. What happened next still feels like a blur, but in the end the giant radscorpion went down, along with my ammunition amount.
Bloody, beaten, and very tired. I made my way back to the water tower, overlooking the strip. This world may be a gigantic wasteland but seeing the Las Vegas’ Lights switch on for the night is one of the most mesmerising sights I’ve ever witnessed to this day, and likely ever will.
