Glasses?

Would eye glasses be an established piece of Elder Scrolls lore? Just a quick question.

There's a monocle in Redguard, and spectacles have been kicking around the real world for a while, so I don't see why not.

Edit: Probably prohibitively expensive, though. Or very uncommon.

In real life, the first glasses appear in italy in the XIIIth century - convex lenses. Reading lenses appeared earlier, arount 9th century. The first hints at concave lenses (correcting myopia) are from the 15th century

Whcih means glases are well within Tamriel's ability, though corecting myopia is proably stretching things a bit.

I'd have thought it would be within the reach of the Dwemer. Although whether that makes it established considering their rarity, is a different question.

I'd imagine eyeglasses would be something the Dwemer would have had, judging by their other technology.

How does steam technology relate to glasses? :P

I'd think that, if anything, steam technology would inhibit the creation of glasses. Fogs up the lenses, afterall. :P

Restoration magic would do the trick, no doubt.

What about the great big telescopes some of the dwemer ruins have? Surely if they can build those, glasses wouldn't be out of their league.

Someone would probably just go to the temple for a priest or to one of the mages guild and "see" if they can get their eyes fixed.

if you can use magic to see in the dark and breath then I'm sure they can use it to see if they have eye problems.

water breathing and nigh-eye are temporary effects, glasses provide a permanent (at least until your vision worsens again <_< ) solution to the problem.

And way more convenient than learning restoration magic or having a healer/pile of scrolls around. Ilussion might be able to do something too - as it's about changing perception maybe in can provide some vision enhancement.

I don't want there to be glasses. It's too modern for TES.

Yeah right. You must not know how long glasses have been in existence.

Glasses themselves ain't that advanced....they're (can be) literally pieces of glass...

And Albides did say that there is a monocle in Redguard, which takes place in 2E

Well, yeah, it takes place in the Second Era, but it's so late that it might as well be the start of the Third Era, making it only a little over 400 years before Oblivion. Just saying.

Besides, a whole lot of what governs the level of technology we see in TES is the http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RuleOfCool; monocles are cooler than normal glasses (sometimes); therefore, the percentage of monocle appearances will be much greater than the percentage of normal glasses appearances, even if those glasses are era-accurate, simple spectacles.

Eh, I suppose.

Though I personally would have found pince-nez Morpheus-esque glasses a bit cooler than monocles.

But whatever. I'm a [censored]. I'm sure I represent a very miniscule minority
