Two main issues that makes Fallout 4 unplayable for me!

Post » Wed Dec 16, 2015 10:09 am

1. Stuttering ( Despite 75+ fps , 144hz and G-sync monitor)

2. FPS drops in city areas ( Shadow distance)

So lets talk about first one. Getting stuttering outside , when sprintig , when in Third-person camera and indoors,

despite how high fps is. There is a work around for all stuttering except when sprinting (sprint stutter wont go away)

So solution is to write ifpsclamp 60 in Fallout 4 preferense file. Which lead to another problem, everytime when fps

drops below my game slows down ( which is also game breaking). I've tried various ways to fix this. I've tried to play

the game in Windowed mode, but then my fps goes on half refresh rate also ive tried to unlock fps but nothing fix this

issue. I've spent a lot hours trying to fix this, but nothing really helped me. This only happens with Fallout 4. Im playing

The Witcher 3 , Battlefront , Battleflied and many more demanding titles butterysmooth without any problems.

The other issue i have which only make things worse is huge fps drops in cities on my high end gaming rig. So obviously

its Shadow distance that causing this. When i lower shadow distance at lowest it works much better in cities with some

small fps drops but then game looks terrible and i can't stand it. Its sad that developers did not even bother to fix this

issue with shadows when everyone feeling it, even those with 980 ti cards.

These are my issue which wont allow me to enjoy a game that i BOUGHT FOR A REAL MONEY! So if you guys knows

any way to fix these (especially first one) please tell me. Beacause lets be honest , devs does not give a sh*t now when

they spending money we gave them, they keep giving us useless patchs that fixes what?.... Thank you in advance and

forgive my bad english!

My PC:

Gigabyte GTX 970 4GB
Intel core i5 4690k
Gigabyte z97 Gaming 3
Balistic Sport 8GB Ram

The first problem can be usually fixed by not using gsync. What you should do is disable iPresentInterval in you falloutprefs.ini then with nvidia inspector force on for VSync and set a fps limit of 60.

For the second problem in cities the only known way to fix is set shadow distance to medium or use shadow boost with custom distance setting for the performance you want.

What fps are you getting in cities that's so bad? To be fair a 970 is not high end. There's at least 2 mainstream Nvidia cards above that one now. Also 8GB Ram is the minimum requirement, again not high end.

Also the way you're complaining and comparing this to other games tells me you don't understand how things work.

I have a 980Ti and get the same issue, hopefully my card is high end enough.

Could you review your post before you actualy post it? GTX 970 is not a high-end card? Okay.

Yes im comparing the game with The witcher 3 because The witcher 3 is far more demanding game with better graphics and atleast near as open world as Fallout 4

and still perfoms much much better in heavy areas where Fallout 4 fails missreably despite poor textures and sack full of bugs.

Ive tried with g-sync turned off as well with iPresentinterval 0 and with fps limit but none of that helps.

G-sync is meant to get rid of stutter that vsync can introduce. Is your frame rate fairly stable? I dont know if I would play wiht FPSclamp.

DO make sure no vsync on in drivers or anywhere else including enb. Have you trried limiting the fframe rate at all?

Have a GTX 970 myself. Got rid of the shuttering effect with vsync on and running using Windows Borderless mode (cap at 60fps) at 1080p.

Its not shadow distance for me. Everything at ultra (or highest settings) except godrays. Set to low for that.

It is not high end. Sure its in that category but a 980, 980ti, and Titan come above, as well as some new Radeons.

It's you're use of absolutions that makes me struggle to take you seriously. "far more demanding", how do you know? Did you program either or both games? "Near as open", everything in the Witcher is static, Fallout is full of little things that move.

I could understand trying to help you, but you're one of those entitled people and I don't really empathise with that. Good luck.

My one piece of advise, lose your gamer's ego. Not every game can run on max settings. Drop shadow distance to medium, godrays to medium, and enjoy your otherwise steady game. Maybe you'll then have a "playable" game.

IMO, the GTX 970 is the lower end of the high end (if that makes sense) :P. Its basically in the middle between Mid-range and High-end. The actual Mid-range is the 950/960 series and the Titan X isn't High-end its more of a niche 980 Ti, it really doesn't apply. Almost like a dual-GPU (I know it isn't).

The GTX 970 averages 30fps at 4K (Fallout 4), so downgrading it to mid-range is unjustified. Thats only 5fps slower than the 980.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce#GeForce_9_series_and_100_series

00-45 Entry-level

55-65 Mid-range

70-95 High-end

So probably 970 the lowest of the high-end ... :liplick:

Like I said its there :) but going by some sites my 760 is high end, which is really isn't lol.

My point was claiming a high end PC with "mid level" stuff like 8GB ram and a 970 doesn't justify not being able to reach a certain level of performance, these games aren't the same.

If he'd said a top i7, 980ti, and 16GB ram, I'd have agreed high end.

I guess its opinion? :P

People who have the i7/980ti specs you mentioned have this same issue though.

That wasn't what I was debating friend. I was musing over phrasing.
