Synths Are Robots

Post » Wed Dec 16, 2015 5:41 am

First of all: I not talking about something philosophical. I am talking about what they techniclly are. Nothing else.

They are not clones with robot parts or something like that. That is just a common misconception. Clones are usally either grown using existing DNA to make a "copy" of some organism or some crazy machine copies someone (purely in fiction so far). Shaun's DNA is merely used as the basis to develop the synths but they are not modified clones of him.

Synths are (mostly) organic robots/ androids made to look and act like humans. They are assembled like any other robot but instead of metal and plastic components organic components are mostly used. They start out at peak physical condition.

It is also suggested that they don't need sleep or food and that they would stay the same (their body at least) throughout their entire existence without outside interference which makes them a bit more roboty in my opinion but the same could maybe be achived through technology in the Fallout universe.

I thought it would be nice to clarify what synths are. If you find language related errors then you can keep them.

I don't think anyone is disagreeing with WHAT they physically are.

Its the whole sentience thing/where do we draw the line.

The game never gives you a clear answer
(Other than the Institute saying they aren't)

Watching the newest Synths get made in the Institute made me question this. It was more like watching a human be assembled bit by bit. But in truth it's all tech and synthetic parts. So yes they are robots. Or androids.

I have seen a lot of comments on youtube and a few here on the forum about the nature of synths that are wrong. The non-technical stuff looks grey on purpose imho.

Thats the thing about opinions. They can never be wrong in the eyes of the person who has them.

The question is not if they are humans...because they are not.

The question is, if they have the right to exist, and if so, should they have the same rights as a human.

Bottom line: Does the right of existence of a human outweighs the right of existence of a synth?

Curie and Nick sure have more right to exist then 99,9% of the living beings on the wasteland.

Do they have soul? Easy answer: If they can love they do have a soul...

Hell even that robot in Diamond City is in love with the professor....

But it isnt a column A or Column B kind of thing. They may not be human but that doesn't automatically make them robots. They are sapient and without interference would have wants and desires of their own which is a really weird thing to add in to a machine built for a purpose. Anyone remember the show Exosquad? They poised the same questions with the Neo Sapiens.

If the result is the same - a fully organic being with memories and personality comparable to a human being - then does it really matter how they reached that state?

They can't be rationalized by our real life rules.

I feel the Synth issue is the new BOS vs Enclave from the FO3 era. Both sides have their points, neither side budges. You are either synth-supportive or not, with very little middle ground.

It's one of those arguements that will go around and round until people are too exhausted, or someone's mother gets brought into it.

If a person has an organic brain then robot is a silly way to refer to them.

Robobrains aside.

Agreed. They're not robots. They're synthetic lifeforms. That's what Father calls them for a reason. They're alive, whereas robots aren't. Hence why he wanted people to move away from calling them androids.

It may be silly but that is what they are.
