Weapon modification idea for ammunition

So, been playing since release, and been enjoying it immensely. I haven't finished the main story yet, and have spent way to many nights building and organizing my settlements when I had intended to do some more quests and exploring. So far, a pretty solid product, and I can see there being so many ways for Bethesda to build on it.

One way I'd like to see, along with everyone's requests for improving settlement management, is to expand weapon modification by allowing more customization in regards to changing the ammunition type of a firearm.

Right now, they only way to change the ammo type is by changing the whole receiver, and then only to one or two options. What I would like to see is adding a new modification slot specifically in regards to the ammo used with the firearm. This could allow the player to make use of ammunition that is under-utilized, like the 5mm, or provide more options for popular ammo, like .45, .308 and 10mm.

This would also allow a person to use whichever receiver they like along with the ammo, so a person could have an automatic or hardened receiver on their Combat Rifle, and use either .45, .308, .38, 10mm or 5mm.

This is mostly a possibility with ballistic weapons, as energy weapons follow a different methodology, but with some tweaking could be adapted.

Not every gun would be able to use every ammunition available, of course. Converting a 10mm to fire a .308 would be a bit much. But allowing, for example, the Automatic Rifle, Combat Rifle, pipe guns and sub-machine guns, this option could be advantageous.

How it could look when modifying a firearm:

Receiver

Chamber (for ammunition type)

Barrel

Grip/Stock

Magazine

Sights

Muzzle

thoughts/ideas?

More choices and options is always a good idea. The freedom to make bad decisions should rest with the player.

Some ammo will be less effective than other rarer types but thats to be expected. It doesn't break the game and there's still that buzz when you find some .50 cal.

Always looking for more options for the player...that is always a good thing.

Actually what you are talking about is changing calibers and rechambering on the fly, not ammo types. Ammo types are rounds like hollow points, armor piercing, incendiary, and explosive.

I'm definitely a supporter of expanding ammo types, as I think it adds more player options and was a good thing in NV. Multi-purpose ammunition would solve a few of my personal issues with ballistic weapons in this game.

But I do also support you in the call for more multi-receivers,....because like you, I would like to re-chamber the combat rifle in 5.56mm, since I do not like the new "assault" rifle at all, and am sitting on a pile of 5.56, because it is the only weapon chambered for it...and personally, I think lacking an effective, lightweight, shoulder fired assault rifle is a terrible design decision.

But honestly, I think the best solution to the problem is to be able to breakdown ammo through a reloading/crafting system, in order to turn unused ammo into high use ammo...which should go alongside adding back in ammo types.
