What are the causes for area-specific CTD crashes?

Post » Sun Dec 20, 2015 10:53 am

I'm trying everything I can with what limited technical knowledge I have to try and figure what the hell makes the game crash in very specific areas.

For some people it's sanctuary, for others it's diamond city, and for some like me it's castle, and much more.

But what is the cause for these things? They seem to happen randomly, and happen regardless of whether or not one's driver is up to date (updated mine and it still crashes) or whether or not their PC has the specs required.

One day, you wake up and bam, some area becomes inaccessible. Has anyone been able to determine the cause behind these strange and game-breaking occurrences?

Things we know:

#1 These occur in a seemingly random fashion

#2 Reverting to previous saves may take you back far enough where this bug doesn't exist, so the bug affects only certain saves

#3 These kinds of bugs aren't really reproducible, or we don't really definitively know how to reproduce them

#4 they can hit even the best of machines and drivers, so specs mean nothing

#5 They occur in EXTREMELY specific areas. The amount of precision in what these bugs affect is incredible. The MILLISECOND you step into the danger zone, you end up seeing nothing but your desktop

#6 There are a wide variety of areas that can be affected

#7 They can affect multiple forms of travel (walking, running, fast travelling, etc.)

#8 Loading an affected save, and then saving again, will make the new save affected just as much as the old save (once the issue occurs, it cannot go away, you can only hope that you don't have to revert back so many hours before it goes away)

Based on my limited knowledge of how these things work and a vantage from my armchair, it might be a bad respawn/reset. Conditions occur where the game performs, say, a divide-by-zero error somewhere, and the game auto-boots to prevent really weird stuff from happening.

It would explain all of those issues- the conditions themselves are random (making them impossible to reproduce with any regularity), and since it works on a respawn (or something similar), it would only affect that cell when it loaded. Driver and machine specs mean nothing, since it would be an error with the game's code, and reloading can cause it to make another roll on the RNG, preventing the problem conditions from occuring.

However, I've never had this problem (yet), and I've got a layman's understanding of how computers work at best- I can assemble one and do some mild troubleshooting, but that's all. So if someone else who is more experienced has a better idea, you should listen to them. And the obvious flaw is that it would only happen once if it was purely tied to (or fixed by) a reset- simply reloading should clear it up.

You are able to load a previous save that is working. Surely you can work from there and find out what was done or something must have triggered the problem? I don't create svae every few hrs. Like every 10-15 mins for me. It's more like gameplay purpose rather than afraid of corrupted saves. I use a combination of quicksave + manual save. Hundreds over hrs in, I don't have a single corrupted save. Maybe others can share their views ...

Note: I turned off all autosaves and depends on myself for the saving

For Sanctuary or other settlements it could be also related to how much items are stored and how built up the the settlements are, especially if the player used the method that makes it possible to extend the building limit.

For me it is certain areas on the west side of the map. I didn't realize I could go to an earlier save and played on. Now I want to explore those regions and they are completely off limits. it is just as described in the original post.

I care now because the area I cant enter is where the ship crashes.

Its good to indicate for those who have problems, any mod installation or console commands used.

Hi Marss, isn't there a register in the ALU of the processor unit for specifically handling division by zero calculations, which are inherently an error in itself? Haven't got my notes to hand but I'm sure I read that.

Edit

After re-reading your last paragraph my post probably makes no sense lol, sorry :P

Hi,

i do have one of those nasty bug. I can not enter Spectacle Island anymore. This is my headquarter, all my stuff is on the island, and all 13 companions are in it. After 250+ Hours, It's kinda heart breaking.

There is two noticable thing i did yesterday before it happen.

- The first was to use a mod called settlement expanded on this specific Workshop.

- The second was to progress in BOS story line. And a couple of radiant quests.

As far as it could be tempting to blame the first, i have been able do to severals fast travel to get settlers from other settlements. And that after my build for the day was complete. Also my settlement is far to be as large as some of the constructions i have seen on the web.

Also i managed to get my ass back to spectacle island a few times buy teleporting alone (without companion) from

Spoiler
the institute
. It doesn't seem to be the case anymore after doing the quest "Operation Ticonderoga".

Hope this can get fixed or i'll go back in time 15 hours ...

Regards.

Edit : I Can Confirm 100% if i don't do "Operation Ticonderoga", i can access Spectacle Island from

Spoiler
The Institute
. And from nowhere else. So i tried to empty the place using tgm to carry all the stuff in one go, but the game crashed wile fast traveling out ... It seems to be more quest related than mod related.

Castle was rather undeveloped in my save (only 7 people and a couple of artillery pieces). But I could see exceeding the build limit causing some FPS problems when you get near, not sure about a CTD though.
