Why are .308 rounds so rare?

Post » Sat Jan 09, 2016 8:23 am

Is anyone else seeing a low amount of .308 being looted in your game? I picked scrounger for my current game specifically for more 308 ammo and it seems that the perk ignores it. Playing on survival and I just upgraded the overseer rifle to 308 rounds and I'm quickly depleting my 308 stores. I have over 5k .50 rounds and I find that a bit stupid since the only weapon I have the uses that ammo is the bolt action rifle. The shops barely have any in stock (except for the castle armory vendor) which makes me believe they might have done this one purpose.

I wonder if difficulty has something to do with it, because at normal, I have more .308 than I can use (over 2k, plus another 2k in storage).

Though, I did buy much of it by trading .38 or pre-war money early on. Once I built the best weapon shop in my settlement, getting ammo in quantity isn't a problem anymore.

Which weapon shop is that? The only one I saw to build with the local leader perk only gives you caps over time depending on settlement population.

It's the third-tier weapon shop (the big one). Once you build that, assign someone to it. Then, wait 24 hours and he'll have a fresh stock of ammo.

If you build another shop at Red Rocket, you'll get even more, and so on. Of course, you could build more at a single location, but this depends on how many settlers you want to divide up.

The ammo I always find in short supply are fusion cells and plasma cartridges. I swear they are more rare than any bullet type. Except maybe the 2mm EC.

Seriously? I have 8k fusion cells. Although I prefer ballistic so maybe that is why. Some day I will bring my Laser rifle with unlimited ammo capacity into some place and go nuts. I agree with the plasma though, they are very hard to find. It is the main reason I don't use plasma weapons as my main weapon, too limited to be wasting them on weak enemies.

Part of the problem might also be because laser rifles do not pack as much punch as, say, hunting rifles or combat rifles, so you end up burning through them faster.

I find shops have .308 in a good supply. I use .44 and shotgun shells the most and 2mm ce as a back up.

What I want to know is why .50 cal sniper rifle svcks so much? I swear .308 is more powerful.

Eh, the .308 hunting rifle isn't better, but the .308 combat rifle almost certainly is.

I think it appears to be more powerful because the .308 receiver has more options of upgrading, whereas the .50 cal only has the one level of damage.

Yeah, but the damage for the .50 cal receiver is straight up better than the best .308 receiver. Maybe the .308 receiver has a better reload time or something, but by the time I've attached a suppressor and taken a few perks I rarely need a followup shot.

Initially, I was always running short on .308. But once I started building Weapons Emporiums (Level 3 build) at several of my settlements, I have no lack of .308 that I can buy. Having Scrounger as high as you can get it (4 eventually) also helps immensely.

Build multiple industrial water purifiers in Sanctuary (or other location with standing water like The Slog or The Castle or Nordhagen Beach or Spectacle Island. Every couple days, take all the water from your workbench that will be produced and then schlep it down to Diamond City or Goodneighbor (or even just Drumlin Diner) and trade it for as much ammo as you need. As frequently as the water spawns is about how often the vendor's ammo inventory resets.

Strange. I use those in my sniper rifles which are, by design, one shot one kill. You're either using the ammo in the wrong gun or you're a terrible shot. "Waste not want not."

I also picked that perk, now most shops only 53 rounds of 308.

From a shot I have seen of FO4 Edit, the counts for ammo loot lists are all over the place. Very high for .38 and .50, and quite low for .308. I believe that these lists may affect the vendor listings as well.

Seems that stuff that is initially rare becomes less so as you level up. I'm at 68 and the bigger weapons dealers always have a nice selection of ammo. Not a huge number of rounds but as long as you use two or three different types and make rounds to gather up more every now and then no problem.

At this point I pretty much use only 2mm EC, shotgun, .45 and (when the .45 runs low) fusion cells. I have sold off most of the rest of it and maintain only a couple hundred rounds of the other stuff just in case.

.308 are pretty easy to come by honestly. Its a lot harder to find a good supply of 5.56mm I've noticed. Until you get into the 20 levels, then the shops stock a bit more.

My main gun is Overseer's Guardian chambered in .308, so I burn through it. I've been buying all the .308 rounds I can find for a long time now though, and I've currently got a bit over 3000. In my experience, .308 rounds and shotgun shells are the hardest to find, with the exception of the more exotic ammo types like the 2mm EC rounds.

This. The most damage I can get out of a .50 sniper rifle is roughly 140ish give or take (don't have the game with me to check). But a .308 combat rifle can dish out almost 200 damage per shot, and is lighter, and shoots much, much more quickly.

The one I'm having problems with is .44. I never even use the things, and when I got Kellogg's gun I only have about 100 .44s. I have over 2000 .38s and .45s, and over 800 .50s and 10mms.

the ammo type you use mostle always seems to be the rarest

but that is only in your mind

when your level gets higher you will find rare ammo more often even 5.56 and 0.50 cal more often not only as loot but also with the traders

How do you get about 200 damage out of a .308 combat rifle and only 140 out of a .50? Can only imagine this with a legendary double-shot combat rifle. Would be nice to get to 200 damage, the only weapon I use is a combat rifle (still .45) doing 80 damage (with Rifleman 3) and because I use a loot overhaul mod ammo is extremely rare in my game. With lvl 29 I have about 100 .308 rounds (a caliber I don't use currently) and usually about 200 .45 rounds at a given time, mostly from buying at vendors. So more damage per shot would be great.

.44 are bugged since they're not affected by the scrounger perk either they're like super rare. Shotgun shells too.
