Settlement crafting....

Post » Sat Jan 09, 2016 1:13 pm

Ok, so I've searched the official wiki and done a search on this forum but there is a LOT of content to sort through and my time is irreplacable..

Anyways... my question is this, I have significant amounts of resources to craft at the crafting station that makes life sustaining resources like power, beds etc.. do I need a specific perk to craft this stuff? because I have more than enough material to craft say a chair for Mama Murphy and I can do some weapon & armor mods in game.

But the craft option is greyed out as it is with almost everything at this crafting area. Its frustrating to say the least because I can figure out the game so far (only at lvl 18) without resorting to spoilers from forums, wikis or game guides etc.. this way the game is MUCH more fun and rewarding to play imo.. however this part is preventing my character from progressing..

So what am I missing or doing wrong? (kinda wish the crafting system was more like Skyrim! )

Thanks in advance. :)

Depends on what you are trying to craft. Building buildings, as far as I can tell, only needs the raw resources, wood, steel etc.. If you mean crafting as in modifying guns or making grenades or something then some of those need perks.

If you try to build something, it will list the researches need and any you don't have enough of will be a dark grey colour or something like that. And it will say Wood 15/20 for example. That means you need 20 wood, but you only have 15.

Thanks, I'm talking about actual settlement needs, like power utilities, building structures, beds and so on... the User interface needs refining to clearly indicate those figures like 15/20, it doesn't say on PC if the 15 is what you have or what you need. But anyway, moving on, I seem to have plenty as in hundreds of things like steel, wood etc and only need a small amounts to build anything with but the option to craft or build is greyed out.

However, advancing some more lately and putting emphasis on crafting style perks in leveling seems to have unlocked more to craft in this area..

I'm still stuck with crafting "Mama Murphy's Chair", have relevant crafting supplies but it still doesn't let me craft her chair... the official wiki is no use either, little info there...

Speak to Murphy again. Sometimes, her dialogue doesn't complete. She should repeat the same request for a chair, or may tell you she needs to sit down. Make sure the game ends the dialogue, and don't pull away. This should fix the issue.

Yes, I'm well aware of finishing dialogue before moving away in any game. Atm, all she is doing when near her is repeating how nice it will be when I create the chair..

Ok, figured this out now, reason "E" crafting key is greyed out is because the in game place that your character is facing doesn't have enough room to craft the item... move your character to somewhere in the general area of the crafting station and item will turn 'green', & KABAM!! "E" crafting key is now available to use.... so obvious isn't it?? NOT!

Ok, this is something that totally eludes me in my workshop crafting menu. I have 2 quests that need my character to build 'electrical wires' to link up objects, I have looked countless times throughout my options whilst in crafting menu including obvious areas like "connectors and switches" but it doesn't list this item that I need. Is this a bug or have others found out how to craft 'electrical wires'? perhaps I'm not using the correct in game terminology, but I think most here will know what I mean..

Electrical wires require copper and can be crafted by selecting an object that uses power, it will have a button in the tool bar saying attach wire.

Thanks, I'll be sure to have a better look at tool bar menu when I launch the game again, but honestly, it should not be a bit hidden like that. I've dug down deep into all menu options when crafting in this area of the game and can craft everything else in the menus for what my characters perks can do... seems mighty odd that this particular piece of crafting is cryptic to say the least..

If my character lacks something for crafting an item its listed as greyed out in the menu but everything else I have is not greyed out. The part for building wires just doesn't show at all. ODD!

It's not actually in the Menu (installing copper wire).

Look down where the commands are (right below the pictures of the menu). Anyways, On PC, the command to attach wires is [space].

The copper wire thing can be confusing at first. Its not an option in the menu's. What you need to do is be in build mode. Then select an item (E key) that needs power or even a generator. Once you have the item selected then hit the space bar on your keyboard. That will show a wire reaching from the object you selected. You can then drag that wire to another object you want the wire to go to. You will know when the wire is in place when it connects to the insulated contact point on the object your attaching it to. Then simply hit the space bar again to fix it in place. Presto, your wire is in place.

One thing to remember is that the wires will only go so far. If you get past the point they will reach the wire will turn red. You need to build a conduit and place it some where in between the two items your trying to connect.

Also, try looking in the "help" menu in the in-game options. It doesn't cover everything, but it does de-mystify a few things.

Yep, the Help menu is one of the best kept secrets in the game that should have been pounded into every one head via loading screens and maybe even a mini quest in game before you could leave Vault 111. A lot of people have no clue its even there.

I found it the first day out of desperation trying to figure out the crafting system like Rodjama is.
