Moving Objects (Decorating)

Post » Sat Jan 09, 2016 7:52 pm

Something I've noticed in the Xbox One version of the game, is that moving objects is more difficult than the previous Fallout's on Xbox.

I've always liked to decorate my homes with some of the items I find in my travels, placing them on shelves, and placing them wasn't always easy.

Often it was a lot of moving the item, then grabbing from another side so the item flips, and back and forth, until you get the item standing up so you can place on a shelf.

In Fallout 4, this seems even harder. Doesn't seem to matter from which end you gab and item, it always holds it the same way, which makes standing something up (Like my glowing Nuka Cola Quantum) almost impossible. I finally settled for putting it into my Nuka Cola Machine, sideways.

I'm hoping one of the future updates could fix this, perhaps using the old system where from whatever end you grab an item from, that becomes the top, so that if I grab the bottle from it's top, the bottle will be carried vertically.

Either that, or more display cases like the magazine rack and Bobble Head display where I can just insert an item and it displays it.

Perhaps a Gun Rack, Tool Rack (there but you can't access it), Nuka Cola Display, etc.

Say if you want to place a bottle on a table or shelf, drop the bottle out of your inventory(using the pipboy, obviously)then switch into build mode, now you can pick up the bottle and place it upright wherever you like.

The real problem however, is when you fast travel back to this location and all the items you have so painstakingly positioned have all clipped through the table/shelf and are rolling about on the floor.

I thought I was the only weirdo who liked to do this. I spent about 20 minutes trying to get a Nuka Cola in the damn vending machine. I got one in perfect, then started on the next one and the first one fell out!!!!! Arg!!!!!

Considering the seriousness of bugs that have been reported, I doubt this is on the dev's priority list, but I sure would like it to be...

Mini clamp, I actually did figure that out right after posting, but it doesn't work for placing in the vending machine, but I'm fine with that, since I can now place on shelves.

Haven't had the clipping issue yet *crosses fingers*

I've got the various models I've found painstakingly positioned on a shelf in my base, they're always exactly where I left them when I go back... My Giddy-Up Buttercup model is the centre piece of my house!

I will have to try this. I'm in the process of trying to stock up the shelves behind my bar with alcohol. My bar/pool hall looks like there was a serious party the night before with bottles and glasses laying everywhere. Plus some ashtrays are upside down.

Waiting for Feng Shui mod to allow for actual decorating. I've never been able to place stuff and have it stay 100% of the time in any Bethesda game I've played (or the first time you pick up something else nearby, all the items nearby "settle" and fall). To me, this is 100% proof that whatever Bethesda wants to call the Engine, it's Gamebryo at it's heart.

Per OPs comment about FO4 being different, it is. I'm guessing the addition of the "hover to loot" code dealing with containers is causing some issue when you point at non-container objects as well.

I did this with some alcohol bottles and food. I came back a couple of hours later to find out that the bottles had fallen through the furniture where I placed them and the food that I placed on the shelf was all over the place, as if a grenade had exploded in there. Some items that you place will eventually fall through any object that you put them on, others seem to have an issue when there's cell reloading or something that causes all items to have collision issues and end up hitting each other and falling (Or it seems that they fall from a certain height, it seems to happen to NPCs as well which is how the end up in the roof sometimes).

A lot of time wasted, but some items such as lit cigarettes, lighters, some weapons and food don't have this problem, the issue is finding out which items have it and which don't. Placing food inside an eat-o-tronic and closing it hasn't had any issues for me so far, I'll have to see if there's a workaround to keep all items in place.
