We have stairs!

Post » Sun Jan 10, 2016 11:11 am

It only took 2 and 1/2 hours but I finally got steps built to the top of the roof at the Red Rocket Truck Stop by Sanctuary!

Piper happily follows me all the way up and down now without complaining.

Yay!

:celebration:

I absolutely love this. Yeah, there could be improvements, but I'm sure they will come in due time. I am having such a blast with Fallout 4.

one of the first things i did was make a staircase vaguely closeish to the roof and just hop on up, i then made a small bridge and secondary set that lowered back down on the roof so you didnt have to jump..

i dont get how people have trouble with something like getting on top of a building when you have these tools... but i know there are still some people who never played minecraft, let alone as extensively as i did..

On the PS4 it's 'Structures' - 'Wood' - 'Stairs'. Not sure if it's laid out different on PC or Xbox.

The trick to it was to start at the top. I'm on PS4 so I can't do a screenshot but I took the short 'two step' stairs and moved them around on the edge of the roof until they turned green while overhanging a bit. Then I locked a set of tall stairs with the platform attached at the top and bottom to the short ones, then another set of the tall stairs, then the taller free standing ones. Those you can put in the ground to adjust the height. They all locked together and she followed me right on up.

There are two types of free standing stairs, there is a short narrow one and a taller wider one. She didn't want to walk up the narrow ones.

Prior to that I was trying to build on the ground and go up but I couldn't get anything to snap and turn green to the roof.

I want to build a bunch of stuff up there where it's safe.

If I were on a PC, I would have two game saves going. One with God mode so I had unlimited resources to build and then my regular game play.

What a blast. :)

He was trying to get Piper up there too, and with the crap AI pathing in this game, that can be easier said than done without "snapping."

You can do that, but the only way I could get settlers and my companion to follow me up was to make a clear path.

I had the stairs close to the edge and I could easily walk on to the roof but my companion refused to follow me. That's when I decided (well 2 hours later lol) to start backwards and pick some stairs that would snap to the roof and turn green when I placed them and then work my way to the ground. Once I did that Piper followed me right on up with no hassle.

Mr. Garvey always seems to find someway to find his way into hard to reach places. I build a house on top of red rocket and he just goes up the stairs all the time because that's where the only bed is located. I use Sanctuary for my people and red rocket as my mansion overlook them with Mr. Garvey as my personal body guard, and codsworth just stands there doing nothing.

They will go to where you want them as long as that's where the only beds are.

Now if you want them there, trapped, just assign them to something in the location and wall them in. You can use this method for Trader stores. just wall the people you assign to the store and they "shouldn't" go anywhere.

Half-hazzardly to get up in the first place and start from top to bottom for stairs, when building on preexisting builkdings. It can be a real pain but you feel all proud and fuzzy when you get it, then you realize or someone else hits you over the head with the fact that it's a game and you just spent 2hrs linning up something only you can see. So you get royally imbibed and sulk by making another set :P
