Can I Kickstart a mod, even if I distribute it for free?

Hello everyone.

I wanted to ask if it's legal to start a Kickstarter to gather some money for mod development (using FO4 GECK) which would be then 100% free for everyone. I wanted to make mod for FO4, but if I go to work I will lack time big time to do anything, so this way I could spend few months on modding instead of working, which theoretically should be fine.

Cheers!

It's not. As per the http://store.steampowered.com/eula/eula_202480 both original and modded content belong to Bethesda. You can't make money out of it. Post-publishing voluntary donations are fine, but funding requests for modding project aren't allowed. You'll find a few Skyrim-related projects on kickstarters but none of them are legal. There's been quite a debate about this which basically ended when http://imgur.com/gallery/btIsD mod was taken down.

I see, it explains it all. That's quite a shame. Thanks a lot for the response.

I've released 162 mods while working full time, and some of them were pretty substantial. You can fit in the time if you put your mind to it.
