Everyone can rename every weapon, so it's more than possible that someone found a rare gun and renamed it for their own purposes.

if it has a star, I don't think you can rename it. Legendary items keep their names as far as I know

Legendary items are different from Unique items, you can change legendaries to any name. Legendary items also have stars.

I have a legendary double shot .44 revolver I renamed -12 step program (the dash assures it will always be towards the top of my inventory screen) and 12 steps as it's a double shot 6 cylinder revolver that cures people of their oxygen addiction

I haven't bothered with names thus far.... I'm still running with weapons like "legendary calibrated improved night vision hardended automatic calibrated combat shotgun" lmao

Most of my favourites have amusing names (well to me anyway) like my mirv modified big boy is called Oppenheimer

I rename my guns, Legendary or otherwise, based on the favorite slot.

1 Wastelander's Friend 10 MM

2 Powerful Shotgun

3 .50 Sniper Rifle

etc.

ive renamed legendaries... you just can't rename unique I believe.

I found a legendary fire assault rifle. I renamed it -FIRESTARTER.... that way its at the top of my weapons list. I rename all my favorited weapons with a - and then capital letters so that way it stands out over things I pick up.

I feel left out of this thread in which every single person is saying the same thing, so I'll just add

There IS a Legendary weapon named "Righteous Authority" -- http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Righteous_Authority . I suspect that the weapon that you mention is most likely that one, renamed. As far as I know, players do NOT have the ability to rename any weapon by adding the Legendary star to the new name. To have the star, it MUST be a game-provided Legendary weapon to begin with.

I like naming weapons according to how my character would with the personality I play him with. My current character has a sense of humor, so I name my weapons accordingly.

Examples: (En. goes before all laser weapons to group them together in menu)

En. Tickle Fight (Maxed out focused laser rifle)

En. Don't you Smile (Maxed out gatling laser)

.38 Trial by Jury Rig (One of my first weapons, upgraded pipe rifle)

Things like that!

My next character will be an ultra sarcastic female SS who uses mainly pistols and light melee weapons!

The only gun I haven't been able to rename is the Silver Submachine Gun.

If you don't like putting dashes in front of weapon names to put them at the top of your inventory, I think putting a space should work too. And apparently you can put HTML tags in the weapon names, too. , , , and
