Naming Settlers and Settler Gear Management

Post » Mon Jan 11, 2016 8:24 pm

Ok, so there's already so much out there about how managing your settler's duties is not clear cut enough. I'll just say this, Why on god's not so green wasteland do my settlers not have names, or at the very least let me name them. I could for example call this guy Johnny Cornfield. Hey look at that i know iv'e assigned this guy to farm corn. Good old Johnny farming all that corn. one simple thing, just let me name them. it would be more immersive and useful.

Additionally, maybe i'm the only one but i really, really, wish there was a "dump" box somewhere in each settlement. in said box i could drop all half decent gear i'm not using and let the settlers grab bag loot as they need it. I want them to be geared up, but i'll be darned if i'm going to take the time to dress each one like a baby.

That is all. Godspeed out there in the wasteland.

I wish there was a way to see what tasks a given settler is assigned to. You can open the workshop and walk up to the settler, and it'll highlight the things that they're assigned to. If they're assigned to crops, it'll highlight the specific crops that they're tending, if they're assigned to a guard post it'll highlight the guard posts, but this doesn't help if you're not in the vicinity of field of view of this given task.

The one workaround I've found for this is in the guns that you equip them with. You can go into the weapon crafting station and rename the guns. Name the gun 'Corn Patch' if they're assigned to tending the corn. Name the gun 'Rooftop Guard Tower' if they're assigned to a guard tower on the roof of a building. Name it 'Sanc to RR' if they run the supply line from Sanctuary to Red Rocket and so on. Then you can pull up the 'trade items' screen and look at the gun to see their assignment.

The 'grab bag' is a nice idea. I'd like that. I did take the time to equip all of my settlers at Sanctuary and The Castle with army/military fatigues, army helmets, and combat armor, as well as good guns (mostly combat rifles, assault rifles, combat shotguns, and 10mm pistols). It took a while.

The whole settlement system feels unfinished and lacks polish. There's no way BGS didn't notice these glaring issues prior to release. Guess they thought modders would fix it, or that they would eventually get around to including some updates in a future DLC.

I thought the same, then the attacks on the settlements got stronger. Although I have tons of turrets, like ~200 defensive, the settlers don't stick together or stay near those turrets for protection. Most of them go Rambo, 1 by 1, and get killed. So I took 1-2 hours to dress each to have like ~120 ballistic and ~120 energy resistance, and gave them 100+ damage guns and grenades. Though the attacks got so violent lately that I must just give each a power armor. ~11 gunners, some with power armor attacked my settlement.

Yeah we need a mod for that, preferably one that makes it's way to consoles. I also wish that you could get them to come with you, you should also be able to take more than one follower or companion with you, just for the sake of realism.

Nick Valentine said I had to choose between him and Piper to travel with because apparently "we can't all go wandering about the wasteland looking for one man" OK, actually Nick we can, we live in a wasteland we can do whatever the F**K we want. There was only THREE of us!!!

I don't want to wander round with an army trailing behind me. But it would be nice to think that my followers and settlers could actually be utilized in that way, it would be more realistic.

Agree, it feels entirely half baked. It's essentially accessible only to people who plan on doing a high charisma build and siding with each the minuteman. It's become more of a chore than anything else, and so I've treated my settlements as nothing more than warehouses for me.

I think the idea itself is wonderful, the implementation is not perfect! I'm sure that given time, Beth will add more features, tighten the existing ones, there are so many things they could add and it is just crying out for some awesome mods. Most of which should be able to make it to consoles.

If Beth can pull of Console mods they will have made history and should be incredibly proud of themselves, I think they will do a lot of work on it themselves but with mods there really is no limit to what can be achieved.

I like your second idea more, I kinda solved the first problem in my playthrough by myself using clothes. But I agree that it's annoying.

This is an excellent idea. Thank you for sharing. Now if I can just figure out what I've got my settlers assigned to. So far I've been dressing all of my "guards" in army fatigues and policeman sunglasses so I can tell them apart from the others. It gets confusing after you get to a certain number of settlers.
