Why is my Legendary Gear so far worth more than standard?

Post » Mon Jan 11, 2016 11:15 pm

Okay so I have not been playing this game long and I have picked up some Legendary stuff but here is my question with an example.

Why is Legendary gear worth more than a piece of what I am thinking either as good or better Standard Gear - for example

Legendary - Assassin's Girded Leather Chest Piece (Reduces damage from humans by 15%)

DMG Resist

Projectile 9

Energy 17

Value 137

Standard - Pocketed Boiled Leather Chest Piece

DMG Resist

Projectile 16

Energy 25

Value 57 !!!

Am I missing something here and is the Legendary chest piece in that example still better? As I would have thought the Standard chest piece was the better one??

About half of the legendary mods you can get on weapons are ok to great, but it seems like 75% of the mods that come on armor are total crap.

Legendary items worth more mainly because of their legendary effects which cannot be crafted.

Actually, from a game lore perspective, I would very much like to know how these effects came to be. Who crafted these legendary items anyway, and how were they made? *Somebody* had to craft them *somehow*, right? I'm up to level 60, and haven't encountered any text logs, journals, dialog, etc., that even remotely hinted at how these items were made. A curious vacancy here.

Now you're just being rational and want lore to back up the arbitrary legendary loot that appeared out of nowhere. No one likes a realist! :P

But yeah, Legendary items are worth more because they are usually better. If you were to mod the Legendary piece to have the same resistance as the regular piece, it would still have the additional bonus of e.g. 15% less dmg from humans, which you cannot mod and therefore is rather valuable.

Ballistic weave is an armor mod you need to put on armor, it does not come standard unless
Spoiler
Tinker Tom sells it.

Even the worst legendary items are valuable for selling, that is the one saving grace when they are on worthless items, that ghoul slaying gamma gun is still worth enough caps that it isn't a loss.

I just got a mod that allows me to craft legendary items, provided you have the right perks. :)

So, the answer to the question "Where do legendary items come from?" is: I made them. :D

Because it is "legendary" regardless of the actual legendary effect.

They are simply rare and that is how Bethesda decided to price them.

That is why pink diamonds are worth more than normal white diamonds; plus people find them desirable. Not sure if yellow diamonds are more common than normal white diamonds, but people generally do not like yellow diamonds so they much lower value.

Though I haven't seen anything about the creation of legendary items itself, with Danse as a companion I have heard him comment on how the brotherhood was aiming to research and replicate such technology (just after picking up a pistol with one of those effects that eliminates reloading)

Because it's unique. You can look at vintage cars as something of an example. A convertible version of the car is typically going to have somewhat less in the performance department. However, it's likely to often be worth more because there were fewer of them produced. It offers that little something extra that makes it more desirable.

They are just a game mechanic Beth wanted in the game and they basically amount to magic so don't ever expect them to be explained within the context of the overall universe.

All I can say about the price of Legendary gear versus standard gear is that I find the Legendary gear (armor and weapons) sells for far less than what the Value says they're worth... :/

That was more a reply to cwy's comment on the lack of reference to legendary weapons. For some reason the quote didn't appear.

But no, I don't expect to see any answers in the vanilla game, just pointing out that it is canonically mentioned.

The most useless legendary items are the ones with all kinds of crazy conditions: use between 6am to 12pm, outdoors, while your health is under 25%, and you're wearing a vault suit, traveling alone, facing east, standing up, etc etc. I'm exaggerating but you know what I mean.

The only legendary item with a definite backstory, AFAIK, is the Shishkebab you obtain from the Finch family, who says it is a family heirloom or something. That implies that it is a very old item, and perhaps so are many legendary items -- so old that not much is known about them. This works well in a totally made-up world like the Elder Scrolls universe, but less well here.

The Shishkebab is a legendary weapon? I've picked it up from the one quest but didn't realise. Maybe you have to complete the quest first, but I like having a weightless backup melee weapon to carry with me.

I think they're kinda silly sometimes too, some less so as you could imagine it to be a case of a mod made by someone much smarter than the Sole Survivor with all the gun nut/armourer e.c.t perks, but then you get a .44 revolver where you somehow stuff 615 rounds into 6 chambers. However, my only point was that there's atleast one in-game reference made to them, so they seem to be more than a mechanical abstraction.

Go with the mini chainsaw. Lightweight, awesome.

Sorry I forgot the actual name.

I don't think the Shishkebab is a legendary item. Anyway, it's lacking unless you give it more damage with FO4edit. Use Kremvh's Tooth or the chainsaw blade. The latter deals permanent damage, you don't have to use blows. Nice to tear through a bunch of ghouls. It's however not the best against legendary foes.

@ OP: legendaries are more worth because they give you additional benefits. I don't find your item comparison very convincing. You can mod the legendaries to the same strength as normal items and have the legendary effect as a plus.

A ghoul slaying gama gun is an collection item to put on display.

I have an staggering fatman, that sounds pretty pointless to me but its no downside of the standard ones.

You can also upgrade legendary items like the leather armor, this can be done even if you don't have the perks just remove the upgrade and put on the legendary item.

it's all in the star... you see that "Star" in their names? like the "check mark" of the nike. the differences between T-shirt and a Nike T-shirt, and we all know that Nike T-shirt is WAY MORE EXPENSIVE! with that check mark and with out, makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE; A star goes a long way.

Ghoul Slaying Gamma Guns can be useful. Pull the Artifact Dish off of Lorenzo's Artifact Gun, and attach it and an Electric Signal Carrier Wave to your Legendary Gamma Gun and you've got a potentially powerful general-use weapon, if not a really bizarre one. Does the shockwave from Lorenzo's Artifact increase with Demolition Expert?
