Just had the strangest random encounter...

So I did things differently on this character then the last one. Taking advise from another thread I started the MQ by skipping Concord and going to Goodneighbor. Visited the Memory Den which put me into the quest for looking for Nick Valentine.

Anyway Nick introduces me to Dogmeat in a cool little intro and off the three of us go in search of Kellogg. We come across a dog that looked all torn apart. Like the wild ones you see in the wastes only this one when I selected it with VATS is green. Not a threat. And yet Dogmeat goes and attacks the friendly yet very ugly dog.

The dog doesn't die however. Instead it becomes wounded much like a companion can and sank to the ground. Dogmeat then trotted off and I was able to actually talk to the dog. Even gave the female dog a new name. "Buttface"

even stranger was no dialog to send to dog anywhere. And the wild dog is now called "Buttface"

But it didn't stop there. The dog started to follow me which Dogmeat did not like and he attacked her again until she was wounded and he disengaged.

Did I overlook something? or what is the deal with the dog? It was ugly! But more of a match for my sole survivor then Dogmeat will ever be.

I've run into the dog seller a couple times and his dogs are beat up looking but I've never come across anything like that. Sounds kinda like settler behavior being downed like that. Wierd that it's following you but Dogmeat doesn't see it as an ally. Kinda strange.

I ran into that dog just outside of Starlight Drive. He (she? it?) followed me at a relatively slow pace, and would ditch me and wander back to where I found him after some time. My best guess is that he's tied to his spawn location, and will follow you and fight for you only within a certain distance of it - but I could be dead flat wrong.

No idea why Dogmeat would be hostile to him. IIRC, I had Codsworth with me when I found him, and they seemed to get along.

the only reason I think dogmeat may have been hostile is he was not exactly a follower. I didn't have him as an option as a companion yet. I was introduced to dogmeat through Nick Valentine when searching for Kellogg. And Nick did not attack "buttface" so who knows. I'm going to look for her tonight when I play and see if I can maybe get her to go to one of my homes.

I am curious about this now lol. Do you guys think this is a bug/incomplete quest or a little easter egg?

Sounds like you've found the Pariah Dog.

I know when you buy one of the dogs from the dog seller guy you can choose a location for it to go, but if you follow it it just does laps around the dog seller and doesn't go to where you sent it. It only turns up at the place you send it when you quick travel there. Maybe the dog seller guy was nearby and you didn't see him.

that's the funny thing because further down the road I encountered the dog seller and bought a different looking dog from him. he had a Rottweiler looking god. where as "buttface" looked like one of the wild savage dogs out in the wastes.

Tonight when I play I am headed back to that place to see if I can find her.
