ok what happens if you have your companion just "wait" somewhere, do they ever leave, so for instance if i have piper just "wait" in the house in diamond city will she stay there the duration of the game unless i have her follow me or does she eventually go back to the most recent location she was at like sanctuary / red rocket etc. ?

Good question. I wanted Piper to go back to her place in Diamond City since her sister is there.
