Burnt bookstextbooksmagazines?

Post » Tue Jan 12, 2016 3:44 am

There are a bunch of items you can find like burnt books, burnt textbooks, burnt magazines and so on that end up in the misc slot in the inventory, but seem to have no actual purpose. There are also various items like the Subway Tokens and some other things that end up in the misc slot, but seem to have no purpose. Some of these items have a carry weight, so when I notice that my 'empty weight' is higher than usual, I have to go through the misc slot and clear these items out. So far I've kept all of these items, but I don't know what their purpose is. Do they even have a purpose? I haven't tried scrapping them, but I assume they have some kind of minimal scrap value. If their only use is to be scrapped, why don't they end up in the junk slot? Some of the non-quest related misc items like the Overdue Books do have a purpose in the game, but aside from things like holotapes and some of the BOS holotags, the Overdue Books are the only misc items I've found that actually do have a purpose.

Does anyone have an answer to this?

Now that you mention it, I haven't checked their value at vendors. That's a possibility. They could have some 'nostalgia value' like some of the other items, such as pre-war money. I'm about to get some game time in, so I'll have to check that out. I'll report back in later on my findings.

I just collect everything. Takes more time to distinguish and leave some stuff behind than to just grab it all . . . sort it out at home.

you can sell them (not all maybe but some) but it is a pittance. I have about 30 of each type right now, and I think I'm going to start manually scrapping them for "cloth" (so weird that paper = cloth, but ah well).

Burnt items - books, magazines, comics, etc have no use other than extreme corner case as decoration if for some bizarre reason you wanted to place as decor in settlements, or sale as minimal value loot.

Given value per weight, not worth picking up unless your OCD re looting everything is that obsessive. (i am fairly obsessive but draw the line at trash like burnt items). There is no scrap value.

Tokens i have found no use as yet but do pock them up for heck of it as there are not that many. Non quest related misc items like robot toys have no use per se but are collectables and i pockup to use as decoration items.

Non quest related holotapes or info notes, scraps, pamphlets, etc i pickup because game stupidly has no read function until item is in your inventory - you cant read a note on the ground or on some dead body/container inventory. After reading i toss into a container i made that holds nothing but stuff i have read, including items post quest you can drop

Burnt books and 'folders' I can't find a use for. I did finally find a use for 'overdue books' though.

You do not have to play long before the MISC section is overwhelmed. Some items you can't drop because it says they are 'quest items'. The others I've started to just drop. I made a trashcan at my base and put all the burnt junk in it. Made a chest for the recordings and such.

No use for paper, but if we had one such as shotgun shells then it could be changed to make paper instead.

If your Barter ability (Charisma-based) is high enough, folders and burnt magazines can be sold for 1 cap each. As far as I have seen, burnt books and textbooks are ALWAYS worth 0 caps, and have no function other than to demonstrate that pre-war, there were A LOT of books scattered about, most of which have not survived the ravages of time. I think the idea is that with the burnt mags, there is at least some readable content remaining.
