Why I Hate the Railroad

Actually, they destroyed University Point because they sent an envoy there to buy the data, and the girl who had the data lied about having it, stalled them for weeks, then tried to go behind their back and sell the data to someone else. And the data at UP wasn't for a gun, it was reactor efficiency data, something they needed to complete phase 3. The gun was an entierly different project unrelated to the data they were trying to buy.

Also, the CPG wasn't The Institute's fault. In fact, they spent 4 years trying to keep the CPG together. The CPG fell apart due to infighting among the various representatives, The Institute got blamed later because they were the weird outsiders, and because the synth was likely the last one sanding due to being a robot.

Well he might not be, but that seems awfully suspicious to me. :P

Maxson: "Hey Kells, you know where are we getting all that food from?"

Kells: "From Teagan."

Maxson: "Well...where's Teagan getting it from?"

Kells: "He says its a secret."

Maxson: "Mmm k."

On University Point, I found that settlement randomly and built a conclusion on it through the notes.

On CPG, I trust Preston and Nick more then the Institute. According to them the CPG wasn't even started when the Institute sent in a synth to slaughter everyone at the meeting. Given the Institute is known for lying, killing, kidnapping and other stuff I'm not giving them the benefit of a doubt, no matter what Dad-son says.

Nah think about it this way, in a wasteland full of raiders, ferals and super mutants all of which cause numerous problems for settlements just happening across a ruined farm with some crops intact you might as well take it. Perfect cover story and it feeds into the BoS's goals.

There's holotapes you can find in The Institute which verify Father's story. A high-ranking Institute member discusses all the work they put into the CPG, and how disappointed they are in how it fell apart. He then begs the current Director to not give up on the surface dwellers, and that Synths could be used to help protect settlements.

So Nick is actually mistaken about the CPG.

Father says nothing about the CPG actually. It comes from holotapes made around the time the event happened 60 some odd years ago.

Slightly related, the Broken Mask Incident of Diamond City was a complete accident, and that synth was never supposed to be sent to the surface at all in the first place. The then director got fairly mad at the robotics division, calls a directorate meeting, and says she is going to make whoever got the synth set up to the surface in the first place held accountable for it.

I stand corrected, thanks for that xD I'm only on hour 58 of my playthrough and haven't really done much exploration of the Institute.

You just described a protection racket.

That's not really any better.

Well except the Brotherhood actually protects. In fact Teagan used a system in the capital wasteland where he would have vertibird patrols follow caravans and assist them in fights to make the BoS look like the friendly protector in the skies and it worked perfectly, the BoS kept caravan lines safe and they got better deals out of it thanks to the protection, the protection would lead to easier trade which means an increase in profit for the caravans as well.

Exactly, I suspect someone on the CPG wanted to take control and then blamed the Institute. The Institute are by no means good guys but It seems they are also the scapegoat for anything that goes wrong at this point because no one can prove that they didn't do it.

Nick is just going on rumors about the CPG so him having the wrong story is plausible.

The Institute actually has good intentions for the long run. They want to preserve humanity, just not the people on the surface right now.

The Brotherhood has good intentions and wants to protect humanity (and only humans) from the evils of technology and it's byproducts.

The Railroad has good intentions and wants to protect what they consider to be all sentient beings. The raider synth isn't even a good excuse because they gave him freedom and free beings are free to choose what they want. In FO:NV, if you released slaves from Caesar and they went on to become raiders, would that be your fault? What about draining the quarry to create a raider base? Is the SS morally responsible for all the traders they've killed?

The Minutemen have good intentions but no organization and they're all just volunteers. The group only lasts as long as it has charismatic leadership.

Everyone has good intentions so you have to just pick the flaws that bother you the least.

I don't think you know what a protection racket is. The Brotherhood actually protects folks from outside forces and instead of charging want a discount. protection racket is the "protector" busts up the place /person unless they get their money and "may" brand the protected as their territory but more likely, they just happen to be in the gang's physical territory .

On the Railroad, the whole "they are sentient individuals who deserve to be free but we mindwipe them and reboot them " thing is irreconcilable to me.
