Don't get attached to your saves on Xbox One.

I just want to say this here, because if I don't I will lose it.

I bought the Xbox One last week because I am accustomed to the Xbox 360. With that, I bought Fallout 4. I've been binge playing since Sunday, and I had over 55 hours and 470/1000 gamerscore unlocked already. I boot up my One today, and my save has gone. All of them. I had multiple saves for my level 48 character because I had heard of saves corrupting. It's not there. I haven't reset my console, deleted anything, tinkered with any settings. Now my save is gone. I have literally visited and cleared nearly every location in the game. I had created settlements with additions of custom-built housing. I had power armor and all the magazines to customize them. Worst part: I had just made it to Diamond City because I wanted to explore the world. I had three main storyline quests completed. Three. And you'd be crazy to think I'll play this game again to finish the story. It is unacceptable to have a game in this day and age that cannot hold a save. I don't care how big the world is or how much it takes to run and process. Best part is my save is gone while my sister's two hour save is sitting pretty. I don't understand how a game so hyped and great can make combat and open world so flawless and then fail massively on saving features and general system requirements like making it so your character can not fall through walls or have their gun morph three feet behind them so all they see is a non-firing gun barrel. No, there is no cloud save. I play offline. No, I have not done anything that would reset my profile. This is just so frustrating and it has totally unmotivated me from playing the game anymore. I'm done. 55 hours of my life in just a few days, binge playing for 12+ hours wasted because Bethesda and the Xbox One can't get their [censored] together. Sorry for posting here. I'm just so angry that people are posting here that their games are getting lost and corrupted and no one is doing anything about it. The Xbox One is a technological mess and I hope that what happened to me doesn't happen to any of you. My advice is to save your save onto a flash drive as soon as possible. Just don't get attached to your save file, because apparently Next Gen is just an excuse to make things glossier and to rake in more undeserved money...

I'm sorry you lost all your saves. Did you try deleting the ones that were corrupted and checking to see if you have cloud saves?

I was getting corrupted saves and had to start hitting the dashboard button and making sure I quit F4 before on turn off my Xbox One. Also, I have that instant-on feature turned off. Don't hold down the dashboard button and quit while the game is running.

Good luck, maybe you will have a save in the cloud somehow.

I am at level 47, had Cait as a companion, when weird stuff started happening. Cait lost armor, weapon and ammo. I tried going back to a previous settlement but it wasn't there. Shortly before the weird stuff started I had discovered Jamaica Plain and a couple of places in the world. Which are now gone. Playing offline is my only choice. I deleted a saved game (6d 17hr ?min). Then tried a new save which did not create a new save. I've tried to overwrite only to lose that one too. I will try the only thing left at the moment, which is move my file to the external storage...fingers crossed. I request an eta on a patch for this save corrupt bug/glitch. Thank you.

Update: Things I just tried: moved to external storage, deleted all but the five most recent saves. Attempted a new save and an overwrite seems to have worked as expected.

My stats: (never changed anything in settings once issues started)

Play offline

All saves are "on"

Pipboy is enabled

Pipboy saves every 5 minutes

All seems well again for me so far..knock on wood.

I've also experienced something like this -- during a session, I suddenly couldn't create new saves. It said "saving" but nothing appeared in the list. I also lost all saves created during that session -- they just vanished. (Overwriting one before I realized what was going on also caused it to disappear.)

Occasionally now when I'm playing I get a message saying "Please Fix Your Saved Games" and it disables my ability to save.

I assumed it was to do with Microsoft's Cloud Service and have contacted their support multiple times. Nothing they suggested fixed it and they said it was unusual and hadn't heard of it before. They told me to post here about it and seeing this post about a similar issue leads me to believe it's a problem with Fallout itself.

I feel your frustration.

I've had all my local saves on a profile become corrupt, twice. I deleted them all and started over. Restart at Level 20 and 23.

I've had the cloud save feature completely break, once, making it impossible to start fallout while connected to XBL, because cloud synching would take hours and then fail anyway. Restart at Level 25. Wiped all cloud and local saves. MS support was worse than useless, and rude afterwards when I got back in touch to explain how I fixed my issue.

I've been stuck in mid-game when it suddenly became impossible to save, and suddenly no files were available to load. Restart at level 13.

I've actually managed to get up to level 60 something this time, but I won't be starting again until the DLC is out if it breaks again.

My conclusion is that The Xbox One OS and it's "our way or the highway" tyrannical network implementation are basically a substantially inferior system to the PS4. Which is really sad for me. My 360 gave me years of fun, but the X1, which I bought just to play FO4, has done nothing but frustrate every attempt I've made to enjoy it or work around it's awful interface and half-assed online integration, DVR, "social" systems, and streaming setup. I'll miss the possibility of backwards game compatibility, but it's not worth sticking with this platform for me, since I'm clearly not in their target demographic anymore.

I know a couple of people playing this game on PS4, and they've had none of these systemic issues, and watching them navigate the OS on that platform is night and day when it comes to intuitive design and player agency. Sony isn't perfect, but MS took the opportunity to lose me as a customer and made the most of it. However much of this can be put down to bad code from Bethesda, the ball was still in Microsofts court when they signed off on that code and put the game up for sale on XBL.
