fallout 4 and Nvidia CP dont go hand in hand

Post » Wed Jan 13, 2016 10:08 pm

After first launching Fallout 4 everything was stunning but

i went to Nvidia CP to disable Vsync, cause in my experience it was better left being disabled in every game released ever.

So i kept playing FO4 thinking Vsync was disabled and it was great, however one time i went to Nvidia CP again to force Supersampling x8,

and i saw Vsync was not disabled at all, so i kept dabbling with it until i accidentally - i have no idea how - finally applied SSx8 and Vsync off.

However, the screen tearing in the game now is immersion breaking and almost unbearable so for the first time ever i wanted to revert every changes i made with Nvidia CP to Fallout 4 but it got stuck.

Can you please tell me how can i remove Fallout 4 from Nvidia CP, or how can i revert back to default settings? Cause now its stuck with Vsync disabled and doesnt matter what im doing it doesnt seem to apply changes.

But... you wanted it off so bad.

Do a clean install of the nvidia drivers, and that should do it.

Yea i wanted it off so bad but i had no idea it will actually cause screen tearing on this one game, cause it never did before.

Umm...can i not change it without uninstalling the drivers? Every other software i can, why not this one? There must be another fix for it.

V sync ALWAYS causes screen tearing when the framerate rendered is higher than the refresh rate of the monitor. It is Science.

In the Nvidia Control Panel, go to Manage 3D Settings, go to the Program Settings (tab). If Fallout 4 is found (on my system it wasn't), Set Vertical Sync, to 'use global setting'. Go back to the Global Settings (tab), set Vertical sync, to 'Use the 3D application setting'.

Now navigate to %userprofile%\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\Fallout4prefs.ini , make sure the following line is like this:

iPresentInterval=1

Okay then if it does always cause screen tearing i never ever noticed it before, but trust me, on this game it is f....ing horrible.

I did what you asked but presetinterval was 1 already, and Nvidia control panel reverts back after saving and closing, to Vsync disabled.

EDIT : this thing only happens with THIS game, everything else ive tried works perfectly with every other game installed.

If the settings revert then the NV Control Panel needs to be reinstalled. It is bugged.

Screen tearing may be less noticable or not present with vsync disabled when the framerate is close to the refresh rate of the monitor. Most games enable vsync by default. Also you may have another program locking framerate (e.g. MSI Afterburner).

What is your framerate in Fallout 4?

Nighttime 58-59

Daytime 44-55

Crowded settlement 25-33

Looking to the left usually decreases my FPS by 10-15 no idea why.

EDIT: Lol my nvidia CP is indeed bugged, wtf ? Just 10 minutes ago everything else was working ok, now i cannot change any setting to any game, it reverts back ....

I would still try the reinstall, make sure you check 'Clean Install' in the Custom install option.

Does that mean all my nvidia settings will be deleted?

Yes. If you have custom profiles for other games that work, you might want to log the information.

Okay i did this, and also updated the driver.

Now it works perfect so thanks a lot mate!

Another question since you seem to have more knowledge about these things.: Do these updates to drivers do something to the picture quality i get? Or its just about more options and compatibility for the control panel ?

Asking cause i actually seem to get a more "clear" screen, might be just my eyes and hallucinations>.>

Drivers updates are mainly for improving performance and stability, especially for newly released games, hence the 'game ready' branding. I cannot rule out graphical quality changes, but it is usually not the case.

What do you mean by: 'more clear screen'?

By that i mean, a few days previously i noticed my screen lagging or "shaking" or "vibrating" whenever i scrolled down the page or was at a great white location, first word comes to my mind: it looked "dirty"

Now during the install my screen went black for a good while and then finished the install, i just set the Vsync on again in CP then came back to this site and i noticed the scrolling became smooth.

Could have been due to the 'corrupted' driver install. Obviously it wasn't syncing correctly.

Yea, thank God i came cryin to this forum.

Now the only beef i have is the considerable fps drop with Vsync, but still worth it a thousand times over that horrible misaligning, screen tearing pixelated mess.

Yes definitely closer, but seems more balanced out.

Daytime its 45-37

Nighttime about 45-48

Left look 33ish (numbers always rolling)

Crowded settlement 28-33

What hardware do you have? A dxdiag report would be helpful. A upgrade might help you get better framerate. Also make sure Godrays and Shadow Distance is Medium or lower.

Everything is at ultra + forcing x8 SS

AMD 8350 4,3ghz

GTX 760 OC

8GB RM

Win 8.1

Upgrade is not possible, this config is barely 6 months old. I only do upgrades if i must.

Im ok with this FPS really, the game looks so gorgeous and immersive again, i can feel the weight and height of structures and stuff

Cant wait to stalk The Fens again at night and crap my pants at every corner.

Ok cool. But I would recommend turning down Godrays and Shadow Distance (I do, even with my setup). They are known to cause performance drops.

Well offing those 2 gives me about 58-60 fps pretty much constant. I loaded up a game in night time and daytime too n i can also safely look left lol, but maybe im missing the godrays though.
