CTDs at intermittent intervals

Post » Thu Jan 14, 2016 2:02 pm

I have had CTDs since the game released. I've played about 170 hours on two characters and both have suffered this problem. The first 150 hours I used no mods, on my second character I added the CBBE texture mod and some mods that give more information in the crafting screen; but like I said I was having crashes before that.

The game could crash within 5 minutes of launching, or I could play a whole night and only see one crash. It never crashes at the main menu, only when in game. It used to seem to crash more often when I left the game on in the 'escape' menu screen.

I have 3 r9 290s and a 4k display, but I've disabled crossfire and play with just a single GPU. I have a fan profile setup in the AMD CCC/crimson that keeps the card cool.

In the game graphics config, I have all the 'checkmark' options disabled and most things set to medium or high. View distance is at about 1/3. I have made no tweaks to the ini files, except recently to enable mods.

I was originally using the 15.11 drivers, then 15.11.1, then Crimson 15.12, and now Crimson 16.1. Crashes occurred with all drivers.

Recently I've been playing the new star wars game and have had no crashing issues.

Anyone have an idea on how to resolve this, or what the cause is? Even just confirmation that it's a known issue on Bethesda's side would be comforting.

Edit to add: when the crash occurs, there's a windows notification that "A display driver has stopped responding and has been restarted" or something like that. The event log is a warning (not error) that says "Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

Maybe a stability issue somewhere. What other games do you play? Crashes, freezes, blue screens, etc in other apps?

Star wars battlefront had some system crashes (blue screens without the blue screen); after I removed a mismatched pair of memory and kept just a single pair of matched memory the issue was resolved. Otherwise don't usually have crashes or bsods; when I did have problems like that on this system it was when I was running two pairs of mismatched memory, like a pair of 8GB with a pair of 4GB, and removing one pair solved the problem.

I played tera, path of exile, far cry 3, gauntlet, ryse, Civ 5, victor vran, wolfenstein new order without any major issues. Aside from most games not supporting crossfire, causing me to disable crossfire and just run with 1 gpu.

Two of the video cards are factory clocked 3% higher than stock. I just used Crimson to downclock them to the stock 947 core clock. The crash just occurred again.

This monitor, asus pb287q, did have problems with dropping the display port connection and then not recognizing it until power cycled, but I sent it in for warranty service and I haven't seen that problem since.

Do what you can to verify your hardware.

The Microsoft memory diagnostic is good. Run it at least over night.

Use any functional testing you have available; like PC Doctor.

Make sure your PSU is a good brand, and rated well over your actual requirements. PSU testers are cheap on Amazon.

Remove two of your video cards and run just one until you get a failure. Then try one of the others.

You are fortunate in having three GPUs - most of us just have to guess if our GPU is bad; you can just swap in one of the others.

Maybe you won't have any failures in testing - but you will be confident your hardware is not at fault.

You are missing the lower half of the report, with the diagnostics listings. Please edit the original (above) spoiler with the full report.

I compared it and it is the same as the output from the tool. Is there some other way to collect the info other than "Save all information"?

I guess it wouldn't hurt to start taking out video cards and checking for a bad one. I also noticed some updated MB drivers and bios from MSI so I will try that first, then start checking hardware if the crash still occurs.

That should have sufficed. Right after your last section (EVR Power Information) there should be a "Diagnostics" section.

You could try this in the command prompt:

dxdiag /dontskip

I tried that and the Diagnostics section is still missing. There's some kind of problem with my diagnostics-related services I think; trying to fix it...This windows install is kind of old and has persisted across a complete system rebuild (went from AMD CPU to Intel; also cloned the system drive and moved from bios to UEFI boot), so it could have some registry issues.

I don't believe diagnostics (WER) was included until Windows 8.x. Although I didn't see it until Windows 10.

I would strongly recommend performing a clean install. Its never a good idea to use the same install when you change a lot of hardware, especially the motherboard and CPU.

Also, you need to perform the memory diagnostic. One bad chip could cause issues.

Yea the diagnostic section is not included in WIndows 7 dxdiags. That started with Win8.

All of which are 32-bit games that dont take up as much memory or are as taxing as FO4 Ill bet.

You play the new battlefront or the old? Other than that possibility your system doesnt have alot of new 64-bit games or even 32-bit games that really push hardware under it's belt.

Still possibly a stability issue somewhere.

Overclocking anything at all CPU, memory, bus? All auto settings in BIOS? Temperatures?

I'm slowly trying things out, but I don't have a lot of time between work and a 2 yr old toddler so have patience with me. I updated some drivers - mobo, audio, intel chipset, asmedia sata controller.

I also ran the windows memory test, extended version for about 20 hours and it had no errors.

I plan to play for a while now to see if the driver updates helped.

Nohoggr: I agree a clean install would be a good idea, but I hate doing clean installs. And in this case it's especially bad: this is a dual-boot system from one SSD boot driver with windows 7 and Gentoo installed. I've been using this install about 5 years. While I could probably keep the Gentoo partition, I always worry that windows will blast away the partitions on my hard drive when doing a clean install. I love Gentoo and I just don't have the time anymore to install and configure it, so I don't want to have to go through that again.

Glad to hear about the dxdiag output being correct; started getting concerned that some services were broken.

Jasper1979: I also play Star Wars Battlefront, which I think is basically Battlefield 4? I own Battlefield 4 but have never launched it. I used to do a mild multiplier overclock on my i5, but it crashed a couple times so I put it back to default. All voltages are on auto, and the memory is set to use the XMP profile.

If FO4 is still crashing my next step will be to remove 2 video cards. Earlier someone asked about the PSU, it's a 1300 watt EVGA.
