Crashes to Desktop... Worse without Mods

Post » Thu Jan 14, 2016 6:09 pm

Hello all!

Fallout 4 has started to crash every time I try to play. I do have mods installed (you can see which ones on the capture) and when mods are installed I can load my save, try to exit the building my character is in, and it will crash on the load screen. Also, the background of the loading screen appears with the text, but the 3D model never appears when it is about to crash.

When I deactivate all my mods via the Nexus Mod Manager, it crashes before I can even get to the beginning menu screen. Turning off my mods makes it worse.

My NVIDIA drivers are up to date. I reinstalled Fallout 4. I restarted my computer several times. I removed my GPU's overclock. I tried to validate the cache 4 times. First time said there was two bad files and fixed them. Second time said there was three. Third and fourth times said it was good. I tried windowed borderless mode.

I'm trying to post the DxDiag, but I keep getting an error message from the forum -_-

Also, the spoiler code is not working for me.

You probably have replaced textures using those mods, could be anything going on in your game.

At this stage I would try a full uninstall/reinstall of game (and uninstall your mods as well in mod manager) and see how it runs, with a fresh installation and zero mods.

OK, first thing to keep in mind, none of the mods out there are made with the Editor for this game. They are made on something else entirely designed for another game and the fact that they even work is a miracle. I won't mod my game other than Texture Replacers until the editor is out.

That being said, no matter where the mods are made, removing them from a game and trying to load a save that had those mods on it is not going to work out well in most cases. You need a test save that has never had a mod installed on it to test a mod mix. And, never save over that slot so it's always fresh.

So, the first thing to try is, can you start a new game with no mods and not have the crashing? Then, adding the mods back one at a time and seeing if your non mod save loads is the next step to isolate the problem mod. Then once you find the stable mix, try loading the mod save that have been using and see what happens.

If you end up with the same mod mix and no crashing on your mod free save and still have crashing when you loaded the mod save, then see my first paragraph as you probably have a corrupted save from using dodgy mods. Or you could have a load order issue, or you could have mod conflicts (not surprising given the lack of an editor right now). You need mod tools FOMM or Wrye Flash or FO4Edit to resolve mod conflicts. I don't know if those tools are updated for this game as of yet, so check the threads here and see if they are updated yet. I doubt the full functionality will be in place until the editor is released so not sure how much success your going to have with this.

Okay, so the problem with your solution is I can't even get to the main menu without the mods being active.

So, I'll try the best I can to use your method. I sorted the mods by date added. Activating the first mod (Full Dialog Interface) lets me get to the main menu.

Water Enhanced - 8K Textures makes it start crashing. I'll skip it and try the ones after it.

I was able to activate all others. So it seems to be that!

I'll try reinstalling the game when I get back to my college dorm (I have a physical copy of Fallout 4; already reinstalled here and the Internet is very horrible and make the people I'm living with upset with the extra horrible speeds).

Thanks for the help!
