If you want to join the Institute?

Post » Fri Jan 15, 2016 2:44 am

I have a role-play where I know I'll be joining the Institute. The problem is this PC really has no interest in any of the other factions. That being the case, how do you find the institute? I mean after I learn about teleporting and all that, where do I build the device if I don't want to actually join any of the other factions? Is there a way to build the device without actually joining?

Railroad, minute men, or BoS the game tries to force you to know all the factions before you deside to destroy one.

You don't have to destroy the Minutemen, so they would be the best choice to help you out, if you don't want to later be forced to murder your friends.

Can you actually join all three up to the point where I have to build the thing? Honestly I have a hard time imagining anyone have a good RP reason to join both the BoS and RR, but can it actually be done?

I'm just curious what your options are if you never join any of them (Never go to the Police Station, Tell RR you wouldn't die for a Synth, Say no to MM help). Once you learn about the teleporting does the game basically say, ok now you MUST join one to get the device built?

According to the Prima Vault Dwellers Survival Guide - you can build it yourself without faction assistance. I don't have it handy, so I can't tell you how to go about it, but the guidebook says you can do it on your own.

You could try

Spoiler
the secret tunnel but there may be an impassable door that needs a code, and you'll have to find it outside the game, and if you didn't know about it the game wouldn't tell you.

Ok, so according to the guidebook you can build the signal interceptor on your own, at any settlement workshop you have uncovered. Just pick a workshop and access the Special menu.

If you build it yourself who will push the button when you are standing on the platform? My first time through I knew I would side with the Institute and I used anyone and everyone I could to meet them. They didn't call me Charmer without reason.

You're forced to the Railroad to even decode the chip.

I don't know who pushes the button - can you do it yourself and then jump on the platform? The guidebook says you can do it yourself without a faction - maybe the guidebook is wrong?

I suspect that, if you can build it yourself, you will require a companiom to push the button, using commands.

Not true, you can be hostile to the railroad. All you need is the Tinker Tom's stuffs to decode it.

So, either you have to kill them before the fact or you have to meet them. In any case, you can't avoid them, since killing them means meeting them. Kind of comes with the territory.

It's not really being forced to join though, it's more of you use the Railroad to decode it and after that you can just never talk with them again. That being said in order to beat the game you HAVE to pick a faction. All four factions are heavily tied into the game much like New Vegas had four factions you needed to work with in order to beat it.

Has anyone found information if we can just build it ourselves? I went ahead with the BoS, but I sure wish I could just do a pure Institute character.

Here's a good RP reason: you fully believe in preserving and studying technology, but you also happen to think that synths and non-feral ghouls can be people, too.

Also, yes, you can. I was part of the Minutemen, the Railroad (and by extension the Institute as an undercover agent), and the BoS at the same time. The only way it doesn't end in almost everyone dying is if you ultimately side with the Minutemen, though. But in my main playthrough, having completed the game, the Prydwen is still in the sky, I'm still a Paladin of the Brotherhood, and the Railroad is still running synth survivors of the Institute out of the Commonwealth. In fact, I just helped train a new squire and then headed over to destroy an anti-synth gang for the Railroad. While I was on my way there I stopped by to help defend a Minutemen checkpoint that was being overwhelmed by Gunners.

There's another reason of course. Infiltrating them to further your own agenda. As tiresome as Preston actually is, I consider the MM my faction, since I basically built them up from scratch. So my first effort is always to keep them supplied and equipped.
