Patriotism in Fallout America

Post » Sat Jan 16, 2016 10:54 am

I have said this before, but in order to do a Fallout game set in another country and do it right, you really need a development staff that is deeply invested in that country and its lore. We would not be playing a game about China, we would be playing a game about preconceived notions that Americans have about China. It might be enjoyable to play, but the Chinese players would probably roll their eyes at just about everything in game.

Hell, take a look at Canada. That country and its citizens are about as close as you can get to the US and its citizens culturally, but there is no way US developers could accurately depicted Canada in the Fallout universe (or vise-versa). That would require Canadian developers to properly do a Fallout game set in Canada. (Of course, it might be possible to do a Canada themed Fallout now considering the new office Bethesda just opened).

WRONG! What is more valuable then knowledge???????? IMO it is one of the most important things the SS does in the entire game.

The library is trashed, there are a handful of overdue books there and everything else has been fried extra crispy. It is no longer a library, it is a tomb for burnt books.

Yeah, that's basically how most of it works. You get the same outcome regardless of your dialog choices.

I'd have to imagine that there's something salvageable there still. I think what we're supposed to take away from that quest is that Daisy visits there, finds some books, and reflects on her fond memories. There are a ton of burnt books there. Being burnt doesn't mean that it's unreadable though. The fact that the burnt books are still intact seems to imply that they're really just 'singed' but still readable, or at least partially readable.

It's one of the few quests I haven't done yet, but I've seen the submariner suit in the "ballistic weave" list, so that might influence my final choice...

That's a fair point, but by the same token the nations of the world created the over-inflated geopolitical situation, it was only one madman (who worked for a corporation rather than one mad man ruling said nation(s)), that stuck a pin in it. The mad corporate leader simply put the last straw on the camel. Everyone else in their paranoia/war mongering simply followed suit. I think it carries a lot of the horrible irony that is seen in other aspects of the game.

But to each his own.

There were lots of books still there, and there are all kinds of book return machines across the Commonwealth that you could find more in. Besides a library is more then just books, it is about the basic idea of mans accumulated knowledge. I know in this modern world real library's are thought to be outdated and near useless but in them you can find a lot of yesterdays and a lot of tomorrows in them I think in a Fallout world they would be even more important for any hope of a decent future.

The idea of getting his uniform did cross my mind, but I'm not killing a friendly NPC for something like that. Does reverse pickpocketing work in this game?

Not sure, you can max out your pickpocket skill and just steal his uniform though. If you leave him for a while and come back he'll be wearing another one. Doing this you can steal multiple uniforms if you feel like outfitting your companions or whatever.

Communism has a much more intence indoctrination process than than countries with freedom and Democracy so it would be harder for him to break from his Communist teachings.
